About a month ago, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to a call about a dog trapped in a hot car. At the time, they suspected that the dog had been stranded in the vehicle for over two hours. After further research, the ASPCA announced that they believe the dog was actually in the car for 24 hours.

The outside temperature was in the mid-80s that day, which can reach over 100 degrees in a parked vehicle in just ten minutes. The dog would’ve perished if people hadn’t expressed concern for him. His recovery was long, but now, he has found his happily ever after.

Fighting for His Life

Several caring New Yorkers called the police when they spotted a fluffy white dog in a hot car. The car was off, and the windows were closed with the dog trapped inside, wearing a leash.

Members of the NYPD 19th Precinct gathered around the car and recorded the rescue as it was happening. One officer broke the glass on the passenger window and reached in to unlock the car. The car alarm went off for a few seconds but then stopped as the officer opened one of the back doors to get to the dog.

“Yesterday’s afternoon temps hovered in the mid 80’s & on an 85° day, it only takes 10 mins for the inside of a car to reach a deadly 102°! It’s prohibited to leave an animal unattended in a car under these dangerous conditions—thankfully the pup was rescued & is being cared for,” the NYPD 19th Precinct wrote on Twitter.

The officers brought the dog to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan. He spent a month there receiving medical and behavioral treatment. Then, he was ready for adoption.

Officer Adopts Dog

The dog, who is an American Eskimo Dog now known as Snow, found his perfect family right away. Officer Aruna Maharaj with the NYPD fell in love with Snow during the rescue, so she kept in touch with the ASPCA during his recovery.

“From the moment Officer Maharaj was involved in this case, she knew Snow was special,” the ASPCA said. “She immediately brought him into her car with the air conditioner blasting, where he sat on her lap, licked her face, and wouldn’t move from her company.”

Officer Maharaj officially adopted Snow once he went through all his necessary care. Snow has adjusted well to his new family and even gets along with his new cat sibling. He loves having a large yard to run around in, and he walks to the park with his family regularly. He’s living the dream!

The NYPD hasn’t mentioned anything about Snow’s previous owner, but hopefully, they’ve been punished for leaving Snow to die in that hot car. No dog deserves to go through that.

Actor and philanthropist Dwayne Johnson played an instrumental part in fulfilling one Los Angeles family’s dreams this week. At the opening of his latest movie, Johnson donned a fun costume to fulfill a family’s greatest wish.

The Hernandez children had begged their parents for years to allow them to have a dog. But with a growing family of six, it wasn’t easy to find the time. And when they finally decided that the time was right, they knew it had to be a special surprise for their four children.

The Search For The Perfect Family Dog

Before the screening, the Hernandez family began searching for the perfect family dog. They knew for certain that they wanted a rescue – an adorable, sweet puppy who could grow up alongside their children. They contacted adoption specialists at Best Friends Animal Society, hoping they could help create a perfect match.

When the parents were approached about making this a surprise for their children, they were thrilled at the idea! Best Friends Animal Society then teamed up with Warner Brothers Pictures to make it happen. And their decision to involve Johnson in the surprise was the icing on the cake.

The Hernandez family treated their children to a trip to the movies. They were getting ready to watch Johnson’s newest film, DC League of Super-Pets, during its opening week. In this movie, Johnson voices Krypto the Super-Dog. Krypto is Superman’s canine best friend who shares his unique set of superpowers.

The audience didn’t know that Krypto would make a special appearance before the show. And what’s more – Johnson himself would be hiding in the super-suit!

A “Super” Surprise

When an announcer welcomed Krypto to the stage, the crowd went wild. They were so excited to see their favorite super-dog up close and in person. And when Johnson removed his mask, they were even more enthralled. Many audience members shed tears at the sight of their favorite actor.

In a video, which Johnson shared on his Instagram, we hear him welcome the Hernandez family up to the stage:

“I was told, by your mom and dad, that you guys have had this dream, like, all of your lives, to get a dog,” Johnson asked the kids. “Is that right?”

The Hernandez children nodded their heads with excitement, in a state of disbelief.

“Alright, well, I’m here!” joked Johnson at first. “Take me home!”

Then, in all seriousness, Johnson tells the family that he has something very special for them and walks into the crowd. While the family embraces, Johnson retrieves an adorable chocolate-brown puppy.

He walks back onstage with the puppy, and the Hernandez children cannot contain their excitement:

“I want to welcome your newest family member,” said Johnson. “This is Quail. Would you like to hold him?”

The children reach out for the puppy and pull him into a warm hug, showering him with kisses and tears of joy. The audience goes wild over such a heartfelt moment as Johnson wishes them goodnight and tells them to enjoy the show.

Meanwhile, the Hernandez family can’t take their eyes off of their new best friend.

The Real Heroes

Instagram followers of the former pro-wrestler were delighted by the actor’s role in this surprise. Though Johnson makes it clear that the real hero of this story is the Best Friends Animal Society:

“Kevin (Hart) and I, we partnered with the Best Friends Animal Society,” said Johnson, “And they do really tremendous work on saving the lives of shelter pets; dogs and cats all across America.”

To a dog comfortably resting on his own porch in his own domain, the approaching delivery person can seem like a threat. That’s why there is some truth to the concept of dogs hating mailmen.

It’s a tough thing to avoid, which is why delivery drivers often have to be very cautious approaching homes where dogs are outside. Recently, a Ring camera captured an interaction between a delivery driver and a dog at the home he was delivering to. That footage is something you just have to see.

“Are You Friendly?”

Grace is a Pit Bull who lives in Missouri. One June day, she was sitting on her porch when an Amazon delivery driver named Eric arrived with a package. Grace’s mom Ashley shared the video their Ring camera captured that day on Instagram.

At first, Eric doesn’t notice Grace as he walks toward the front door. Then, startled, he says hello to the Pittie from a few feet away.

“Are you friendly? I feel like you’re not,” he says to her.

He continues to chat calmly with Grace without getting closer and even asks her permission to put down the box on the porch. The whole time Grace remains sitting, just watching him.

“I’m gonna set it for your mom right here, okay? Okay, can I go up here?”

Eric takes a few more tentative steps and sets the package on the end of the porch. Seeing Grace’s calm reaction, Eric gives a squeal of joy, introduces himself, and taps excitedly on the package. It’s almost like that’s all Grace needed.

She stands up and immediately starts gently wagging her tail. Based on her body language and soft approach, Eric realizes that Grace is a “friendly doggie.” And just like that, they’re pals!

“Winning people over one delivery at a time….Hi Eric, I’m Grace.” Ashley captioned the Instagram video.

Not only does this sweet footage defy the dog/delivery driver rivalry cliche, but it also shows that not all Pit Bulls are aggressive.

After Ashley’s video went viral, Eric himself actually commented on her Instagram post.

It seems like Grace has her own special spot on the porch and hangs out there often, so who knows, maybe she and Eric will meet again.

Rufus is an adorable five-year-old Blue Heeler. He was reunited with his family this week after spending nearly a year alone on the streets of Santa Fe. Rufus, who is completely deaf, escaped from his family home in early September 2021, and an entire community has been on the search for him since.

There were certainly those who feared that they would not find him alive. Rufus’ family had just moved to Santa Fe and had barely lived in the area one month when he ran away. What chance did a special needs dog have surviving on the streets of an unknown city?

Those fears were put to rest when, to everyone’s surprise, Rufus was spotted one day. On July 3rd of this year, a motorcyclist saw Rufus on the side of a busy road and sent his picture to Team Frijoles. This particular group, which specializes in lost pet recovery, had been on the search for Rufus since the very beginning.

Team Frijoles assisted Rufus’ family in handing out flyers and creating social media campaigns. They worked alongside the Martinez family for almost a year to bring Rufus home.

A Thoughtful Gift

Rufus was gifted to his owner, Marisa Martinez, after her daughter’s death. Her child succumbed to pediatric cancer at the age of nine — a devastating blow to the entire family. The person who gifted Rufus believed that he would bring the Martinezes peace and comfort, a job at which he excelled.

The pairing was ideal as Rufus is a special needs dog, and his owner is a special education teacher. They quickly became a bonded pair. Martinez even taught Rufus sign language to communicate!

This family’s history of loss made Rufus’ disappearance even more distressing. The loss of another family member was all but unbearable. The Martinez family searched tirelessly for months following his disappearance. They never gave up hope for his safe return. Still, they had no choice but to come to terms with a new kind of Rufus-less life.

A Miraculous Return

But then Rufus reappeared, an event which has since been called a one-of-a-kind miracle. While we don’t know where this brave pup was for the past year nor how he survived, we know that Rufus’s bravery and perseverance are unlike any other.

Once they had received Rufus’ photo from the Good Samaritan, Team Frijoles went to work. They set up a humane trap for Rufus, attempting to lure him in with food, and he took the bait. Team Frijoles was able to bring him out of the elements and into a safe place.

Rufus would spend the next several days at the shelter as his family was out of the country visiting relatives. However, a Zoom video call with the family and a microchip scan confirmed that this was, indeed, the missing Martinez dog. And his family was ECSTATIC.

An Emotional Reunion

When Rufus and his family were finally reunited, onlookers shed many tears. It was clear that they had not stopped thinking of one another for a single moment. Rufus was, at first, apprehensive when approaching his owner. After all, he had not seen her in nearly a year — how could he be sure this was really his mom?

Rufus’ nervous behavior changed instantly when Martinez used a hand signal to say hello. He sniffed her outstretched hand and became puppy-like in his greeting. He began rolling on the ground for belly rubs, snuggling into her arms, and giving her endless kisses. Martinez then loaded Rufus into the family car, ready to take him home.

Martinez knows in her heart that Rufus is a miracle dog. She hopes that their story will encourage others never to give up, no matter how hard things may seem:

“We want this to be a feel good story of a sweet dog with disabilities who is magical,” said Martinez. “Who had overcome the wilderness, being deaf, being a fighter, and helping a mommy in mourning.”
