Smokey Feature

Smokey was adopted as a young puppy by a family who showered him with tons of toys. But it was a stuffed elephant with large ears that was his absolute favorite. Despite the fact that he could have easily torn it to shreds in minutes, he was always extremely gentle with it. He even took it with him on walks and slept with it every night.

He lived in a loving home until he was five, but then everything changed.

His owner lost his job, and they started to struggle. They downsized their home, but it still wasn’t enough. It became difficult to keep Smokey fed. So they decided to see if anyone they knew would be able to take care of him. But no one was able to accommodate such a large dog.

When they found out that they were going to lose their house, they tried even harder to find him a new home. But finally, they had to face the facts that they could no longer care for Smokey. They made the extraordinarily difficult decision to surrender him to a shelter. They dropped him off with his favorite toy, and said goodbye forever.

Smokey was shattered. His heart was completely broken. After losing his people and having to adjust to life in the shelter, Smokey started to suffer from severe anxiety. He had no interest in playing or interacting with any of the shelter volunteers. He simply laid in the corner of his crate, clutching his elephant in his mouth.

The shelter scrambled to get him adopted as soon as they possibly could as accommodations for intaking animals were extremely limited. The photos of him with his elephant drew attention from potential adopters, and the shelter was extremely hopeful that he would be adopted soon.

But every time a family came to see if they connected with him, he would hide in the corner. When they tried to approach him, he was so scared that he would growl. Since he started to show signs of aggression, the shelter was forced to take him off the list of “adoptable dogs.” Unfortunately, this essentially put him on death row, and he was headed towards being put down.

The shelter didn’t have the space or ability to accommodate a dog that they couldn’t get adopted. So the date was set. He had to be adopted by then or he would be euthanized. But the shelter wasn’t going to give-up. They didn’t want Smokey to die.

So they started to search for other rescues that could take Smokey. They knew he would do so much better out of a stressful shelter environment. Thankfully, I Have A Dream rescue organization swooped in at the nick of time to save him. They promised that they would find him the perfect foster, and that they were willing to be incredibly patient to find him the forever family of his dreams.

As soon as he moved in with a foster family, everything changed. All the stress he was feeling in the shelter seemed to melt away. Suddenly, he had so much energy and was willing to play. Much earlier than they expected, the rescue decided to make him available for adoption again.

But first, they wanted to reach out to his former family and see if they were able to take care of him again. Unfortunately, they still weren’t in a fitting financial position to take him back. They were just so grateful that he was saved from being put down and that he would be able to live a lovely life.

The pictures of him clutching his beloved stuffed elephant made him very popular on social media. So it wasn’t long after he was officially up for adoption that Smokey, with his favorite stuffed toy in tow, found himself a wonderful new forever family.

See Smokey’s heartfelt story of hope below.

Prue with Mission Paws’ible saw a little puppy shaking in the corner of a building. He had lost so much fur from mange that he looked pink from his exposed skin. Prue could see that the pup was cruelly dumped by his owner. How long was the puppy on his own fighting to survive? All that mattered now was that an animal rescuer found him before it was too late!

YouTube

Since the dog seemed otherwise healthy, Prue brought him home to treat his mange. She noticed that his nails were incredibly long! This was a tell-tale sign that he had been in a cage for a lengthy amount of time. Prue went to work right away. She oiled and shampooed his skin to ease his pain.

YouTube

A couple was vacationing nearby for several months and offered to foster the dog. They did a fantastic job with him! His fur grew back, and he learned what love truly felt like. The next step was finding this pup a forever home!

A man stepped forward when he saw the dog’s photo online. What follows is magnificent! The pup, now named Romeo, is thriving. We are so grateful for this incredible rescue! Just wait until you see the puppy’s transformation!

What Are The Benefit of Freeze-Dried Dog Treats?

Freeze-dried dog treats come with a multitude of benefits, making them an excellent choice for your dog’s snack time.

  1. Nutrient Retention: The freeze-drying process retains most of the nutrients found in the original ingredients. This method eliminates the need for preservatives, ensuring that your dog gets the full nutritional benefits from the treatment.
  2. High-Quality Ingredients: Freeze-dried treats are typically made with high-quality ingredients, such as whole meats and fresh fruits or vegetables, further contributing to their nutritional value.
  3. Long Shelf Life: Due to the removal of water during the freeze-drying process, these treats can last a long time without losing their nutritional quality, as long as they’re stored properly.
  4. Easy Digestion: These treats are often easier to digest compared to traditional treats. This is because the freeze-drying process breaks down the cells of the raw ingredients, making them more digestible.
  5. Appeal: Dogs tend to love the taste and texture of freeze-dried treats, which can make them great for training or rewarding good behavior.

Remember, while freeze-dried treats can be a fantastic supplement to your dog’s diet, they shouldn’t replace a complete, balanced meal. Always monitor your dog’s overall calorie intake to maintain a healthy weight.

Spike’s family adopted him from a rescue. He was initially shy when they met the pup, but once they took him on a walk, he kept looking back to ensure the family was still with him. He got attached to his new human pack pretty quickly! The family made it official and brought him home.

YouTube

The family decided Spike would be a “downstairs” dog, but the pup had other plans. He made himself at home in his mom and dad’s room, insisting their bed was his as well! He adored all the snuggles he could get. But as Spike aged, everything changed.

YouTube

The senior pup suffered two strokes. He could no longer climb the stairs due to his health challenges and old age. The idea of Spike sleeping alone broke his family’s hearts, so they decided each of them would take turns sleeping on the fold-out couch with him.

A shelter pup named Beasley was on the euthanasia list due to medical problems. Dizzy Dog Animal Rescue bailed him out just in time and placed Beasley in a foster home. Once his medical conditions cleared up, the pup went up for adoption. That’s when Corey saw his post and fell in love with Beasley!

YouTube

At first, Corey’s partner Andrew said no way. They already had a dog named Roman, but Corey assured the rescue that she would do her best to get her way. And she did! When they first met Beasley, the dog knew he belonged with them. He hopped right into their car with his tail wagging!

YouTube

Corey was surprised to see that Beasley was much smaller than expected. She calls him her tiny tank, weighing in at 57 pounds of solid love! Beasley tells his mama he’s all snuggly and happy by sticking out his tongue and it’s too darn cute! The pup’s memory is impressive! When he goes for walks and someone pays attention to him, he’ll stop at their house the next day seeking some affection.

We are thrilled Beasley was rescued from the shelter just in time! You’ve got to meet the little meatball- we are so in love with this pup, and you will be too! Thank you, Corey and Andrew, for giving Beasley a loving home.

As an everlasting devotee of the lovable and captivating Dachshund breed, I have found joy and companionship in their playful nature, resilience, and unmistakable loyalty. Dachshunds, with their charming elongated bodies and vivacious personalities, easily burrow their way into our hearts, making their inevitable departure from our lives all the more poignant. It’s never easy to say goodbye, but there are beautiful and meaningful ways we can preserve the memories of our beloved four-legged companions. Here are five ways to keep the memory of your cherished Dachshund alive.

1. A Memorial Garden

Dachshunds are famously fond of the outdoors, their inquisitive noses constantly leading them on exciting expeditions in your garden. Honour your pet’s life by creating a special corner in your garden dedicated to them. Plant your Dachshund’s favorite flowers, add a comfortable bench, and place a memorial stone etched with their name. This peaceful sanctuary will not only serve as a lovely tribute but also a place where you can find solace, surrounded by nature’s beauty and your pet’s spirit.

2. Custom Artwork

Immortalize your Dachshund’s adorable visage through custom artwork. Commission a portrait from a professional artist or create your own if you’re artistically inclined. You could choose a classic oil painting, a modern digital print, or even a whimsical caricature that captures your pet’s unique personality. The sight of this heartfelt piece hanging on your wall will elicit precious memories every time you glance at it.

3. Jewelry Keepsake

There is a particular comfort in carrying a tangible piece of your beloved pet with you. Personalized jewelry like a pendant or bracelet etched with your Dachshund’s image or name can be an elegant and constant reminder of the love you shared. For a more profound connection, consider having a small amount of your pet’s ashes turned into a beautiful piece of memorial jewelry. This symbolic keepsake can keep you connected to your pet in a very personal and intimate way.

4. Photo Album or Digital Slideshow

Compile your favorite photos of your Dachshund into a physical album or digital slideshow. Include shots from their puppy days, their most mischievous escapades, and those quiet moments when they simply enjoyed your company. This visual journey can serve as a joyful celebration of your pet’s life and the significant moments you shared. When you miss your furry friend, you can revisit these captured memories, each picture telling a story, each story a testament of their unforgettable presence.

5. Support Animal Rescue

One of the most profound ways to honor your Dachshund’s memory is by helping other animals in need. Consider donating to an animal shelter or rescue organization in your pet’s name. Alternatively, you could sponsor a kennel or run a fundraiser. This act of kindness can create a lasting legacy for your Dachshund, offering less fortunate dogs a chance for a better life.

Grieving the loss of a beloved Dachshund is a process, one that ebbs and flows with time. The emptiness they leave behind is a testament to the profound impact they had on our lives. While it’s essential to allow ourselves to mourn, it’s equally crucial to celebrate their lives and the love they gave so freely.

Remember, it’s not about replacing our dear pets or forgetting the pain of their loss; rather, it’s about cherishing the joy they brought into our lives and preserving their memory in ways that resonate with their indomitable spirit. Through these actions, our beloved Dachshunds continue to live on, their paw prints indelibly etched in our hearts, their joy and love reverberating through our lives long after they’ve trotted over the rainbow bridge.

How Are Foods for Dogs with Kidney Disease Different?

Foods formulated for dogs with kidney disease are specifically designed to help reduce the workload on the kidneys and manage the symptoms of the disease. Here’s how they differ from regular dog foods:

  1. Reduced Protein: Dogs with kidney disease often benefit from diets that have lower protein content than regular dog food. This is because the metabolism of proteins produces nitrogenous waste products that the kidneys need to eliminate. Lower protein diets help reduce the accumulation of these waste products, which can be beneficial in dogs with reduced kidney function. However, it’s crucial that the protein included is of high quality to meet their essential amino acid requirements.
  2. Lower Phosphorus: Phosphorus is another nutrient that needs to be carefully controlled in dogs with kidney disease. High phosphorus levels can exacerbate kidney disease, and since the kidneys play a key role in phosphorus regulation, their inability to filter it properly can lead to elevated phosphorus levels in the blood. Thus, kidney diets are formulated to have lower phosphorus content.
  3. Added Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Some foods for dogs with kidney disease are fortified with omega-3 fatty acids because they can help reduce inflammation in the kidneys, slowing the progression of the disease.
  4. Increased Vitamin B Complex: Kidney diets often have increased levels of B vitamins because these are water-soluble vitamins that can be lost through the increased urination often associated with kidney disease.
  5. Controlled Sodium: Many renal diets also control sodium levels to help manage blood pressure, as hypertension can be a common complication in dogs with kidney disease.

Remember, it’s crucial to work with your vet or a pet nutrition expert when managing a health condition like kidney disease through diet. They can provide guidance tailored to your dog’s specific needs and circumstances.

Why is Veterinarian Approval Required for a Kidney/Renal Support Food?

Kidney or renal support dog foods are specifically formulated to manage kidney disease or renal failure in dogs. These foods have unique nutritional profiles designed to alleviate the strain on the kidneys, and while beneficial for dogs with kidney disease, they may not be suitable for all dogs.

Here are a few reasons why veterinarian approval is required:

  1. Medical Validation: Kidney disease should be diagnosed by a veterinarian based on clinical signs, history, and diagnostic tests. A vet can confirm the presence and stage of kidney disease and therefore the need for a specialized diet.
  2. Tailored Nutrition: Dogs with kidney disease require a specific nutrient profile, including lower protein and phosphorus, controlled sodium, and added B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. A vet can ensure this diet is suitable for your dog’s specific health status.
  3. Monitoring: Dogs with kidney disease need regular check-ups to monitor the progression of the disease and adjust the diet or medications as needed. A diet change should always be supervised by a vet to ensure the dog is responding well and not experiencing any adverse effects.
  4. Other Health Conditions: Some dogs with kidney disease may have other health conditions that require dietary considerations. A vet can evaluate the whole health picture and make diet recommendations that take into account all of a dog’s health needs.
  5. Avoid Unnecessary Use: Without veterinary approval, these diets might be used by well-meaning pet owners who believe they are providing a healthier option for their pet, when in fact, for a dog without kidney disease, this diet could lead to nutritional deficiencies.

It’s always crucial to consult with your vet before making any significant changes to your dog’s diet, especially when dealing with a health condition like kidney disease. They can provide the best guidance and monitoring to ensure your dog’s health and well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kidney/Urinary/Renal Support Dog Foods

  1. What makes kidney/renal support dog food different? Kidney/renal support dog food is specially formulated with lower protein content, controlled phosphorus and sodium levels, and supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins. These adjustments help reduce the workload on the kidneys, manage the symptoms of kidney disease, and support overall kidney health.
  2. Why does my dog need a vet’s prescription for kidney/renal support food? A vet’s prescription ensures that your dog has been properly diagnosed with kidney disease and requires a specialized diet. It also allows for regular monitoring of your dog’s health and adjustments to the diet as necessary. Additionally, it prevents the inappropriate use of these diets in dogs without kidney disease.
  3. Can I give kidney/renal support food to my dog if they don’t have kidney disease? Kidney/renal support food is designed for dogs with specific health issues and may not provide balanced nutrition for dogs without these conditions. These diets can lead to nutritional deficiencies if given to healthy dogs, so they should only be fed under a vet’s supervision.
  4. Can kidney/renal support food reverse my dog’s kidney disease? While kidney/renal support food can’t reverse kidney disease, it can help manage the disease’s symptoms, slow its progression, and improve your dog’s quality of life. The goal is to reduce the strain on the kidneys and provide optimal nutrition for your dog’s health needs.
  5. How quickly will I see improvements in my dog after starting kidney/renal support food? The response time can vary between dogs. Some might show improvements within a few weeks, while others may take longer. Regular vet check-ups are essential to monitor your dog’s response and adjust the diet or treatment plan as necessary.
  6. Can puppies eat kidney/renal support food? Kidney/renal support food is typically not recommended for puppies unless they have a specific medical condition that requires it. Puppies have different nutritional needs, and kidney/renal support food may not provide the necessary nutrients for growth and development.
  7. Can I mix regular dog food with kidney/renal support food? Mixing regular dog food with kidney/renal support food can dilute the therapeutic effects of the renal diet. Always consult with your vet before making any changes to your dog’s diet, especially if they’re on a prescribed diet.
  8. Are there homemade diet options for dogs with kidney disease? While there are potential homemade diet options, it’s challenging to ensure they provide all the necessary nutrients and meet the specific dietary needs of dogs with kidney disease. Always consult with a vet or a pet nutrition expert before attempting a homemade diet for a dog with a health condition.
  9. Does kidney/renal support food help with urinary problems? Some types of urinary problems, like certain types of urinary stones, may improve with a diet similar to a kidney diet, but it depends on the specific urinary issue. Your vet can recommend the appropriate diet based on your dog’s specific needs.
  10. Why is kidney/renal support food more expensive? Kidney/renal support food is often more expensive due to the specialized formulation, high-quality ingredients, and rigorous testing that goes into creating these therapeutic diets. They’re specifically designed to manage a medical condition, which involves additional research and development costs.

Conclusion: Best Foods for Dogs with Kidney Disease

Managing kidney disease in dogs is a challenging journey, but with the right diet and care, you can significantly improve your dog’s quality of life. The foods we’ve highlighted in this article are designed to support your pet’s kidney health by reducing waste products, controlling phosphorus levels, and providing optimal nutrition. Always remember that every dog is unique, and what works best will depend on their specific situation, disease stage, and overall health.
