It’s easy to get caught up in fame on social media. Many people become obsessed with gaining followers and viewers on sites like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. But the lengths that some people will go to get recognized can be a bit extreme.

A TikTok user was repeatedly praised for saving a dog tied to train tracks in a heart-wrenching video. However, experts later announced that the video was likely faked for fame. Many people were worried for the dog’s life, even though no dog was in danger to begin with. Pulling off a stunt like that was no easy process either.

An Emotional Video

In the video, a man is seen sprinting down railroad tracks with a train close behind him. Further down, a small dog is tied to the tracks. The dog looks like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

The man quickly unties the dog, then runs off the tracks with the pup right beside him. They jump off the tracks only seconds before the train speeds by. During this commotion, the train is honking its horn, and people in the background are urging the man not to do it.

After this 16-second video was first posted, people started calling the man a legend. It was an impressive and risky stunt he pulled, and it was certainly very believable. However, several people in the comments mentioned that something about the video seemed off.

Then, the video was later taken down from the TikTok user’s account. It violated the site’s “community guidelines of dangerous acts.” Yet, the video continues to pop up on other accounts, causing more and more people to be skeptical.

Signs That It’s Fake

Video experts examined the post closely and concluded that it was likely faked. Not only was the event not featured on any news stories, but the dog also doesn’t seem in distress. When the dog sees the man in the video, they walk toward him and wag their tail as if they know him.

“The way the dog reacts like he knows the guy, and that (the man) knows how to untie the leash, all as if it was planned,” Sarah Ross from Four Paws International said. “It looks suspicious.”

So, experts suspect that the user filmed himself rescuing the dog first, and then edited in the train after. A few small details point to this explanation. First of all, the shadows of the train are a bit off. When it passes the man and dog, the man still has a small shadow under him despite being in the shade. At one point, the shadows are also blurry to indicate that two scenes were edited together.

While the video seems impressive at first, the man is receiving a lot of praise for something he probably didn’t do. A dog abandoned on train tracks is a serious issue, so it shouldn’t be taken lightly or joked about. It’s amazing what people will do for some extra social media followers.

Hookworms are an intestinal parasite (worm) that lives in the small intestines of dogs and other animals. The most common species of hookworm is Ancylostoma caninum, although there are other species of hookworms that can also infect dogs. This parasite primarily causes problems in young puppies, but it can also affect adult dogs.

Hookworms get their name from their body shape. These small worms (only half an inch long) have a body that bends to form a hook shape. They use their mouthparts, which contain either teeth or cutting plates, to attach to the intestinal wall. Once attached, hookworms begin sucking blood from their host. This can lead to anemia (lack of red blood cells), which is the most common problem associated with hookworms. In addition to causing anemia, severe hookworm infestations can cause significant intestinal inflammation and damage.

What Causes Hookworms in Dogs?

To better understand what causes hookworms in dogs, it’s helpful to think about the hookworm life cycle in dogs first.

When a dog has a hookworm infection, adult female hookworms lay eggs, which are then passed in the dog’s feces (stool). Within a day or two of being passed in the environment, the eggs develop into larvae and mature to an infective stage. Infective hookworm larvae remain active in the soil for up to several months, which means they can reinfect the same dog or infect other pets and even people.

There are a few ways that a dog can become infected with hookworms:

•  Ingestion of hookworm larvae: If a dog eats contaminated feces (or grass/leaves contaminated by infected feces), hookworm larvae enter the intestinal tract. In two to four weeks, these larvae will mature and create an adult intestinal hookworm infection.
• Skin contact with hookworm larvae: If a dog walks through (or lays on) contaminated stool or soil, infective larvae can migrate across the skin and enter the body’s tissues. These tissue larvae remain inactivated, in cysts, until they are activated by a chemical signal. The death of adult intestinal hookworms signals inactivated larvae to mature and travel to the intestines, creating a new infection.
• From mother to puppies: In female dogs, pregnancy signals inactivated larvae to mature and travel to the mammary glands. The larvae are passed in the milk to the nursing puppies.

Hookworms are a zoonotic parasite, meaning that they can infect both animals and humans. Cases of hookworms in humans from dogs can occur. If a human ingests soil contaminated by dog feces (for example, in the case of a young child who plays in contaminated soil and eats without washing his hands), an intestinal infection can develop. Like dogs, humans can also be infected through skin contact with contaminated soil. Hookworm larvae can penetrate unprotected skin, causing a rash called cutaneous larva migrans.

Hookworm Symptoms in Dogs

The signs of hookworms in dogs are variable. Severe signs are typically seen in young puppies, due to the puppies’ small size and the significant effects of blood loss in growing animals. In newborn puppies, severe anemia and death can occur as early as one week after birth, before the adult hookworms even begin laying eggs. In older puppies, anemia can cause lethargy, poor appetite, and failure to gain weight appropriately. If you look closely at the gums of an anemic puppy, you may notice that they are pale or white, instead of having the normal healthy pink color. Even in older puppies, hookworms can be fatal.

In adult dogs, the signs of hookworms vary depending on the severity of the infection. Like puppies, the most common effect of hookworms in adult dogs is anemia. Adult dogs with anemia are often lethargic, reluctant to exercise, and may demonstrate shortness of breath. Additionally, some dogs may develop dark, tarry stools due to intestinal inflammation caused by hookworm infection.

Diagnosing Hookworms in Dogs

Your veterinarian will diagnose hookworms by examining a sample of your dog’s feces under a microscope to look for eggs.

Clients often ask, “can you see hookworms in dog poop?” Unfortunately, the answer is no. A dog can have a severe hookworm infestation without shedding any adult worms. Therefore, veterinarians rely on microscopic examination for eggs or fecal antigen testing to diagnose hookworms. Antigen tests look for worm proteins that can be detected if your dog has an infection.

In addition to fecal parasite testing, which is performed specifically to look for hookworms, dogs with signs of anemia may also undergo blood tests to assess the severity of their anemia and look for evidence of other illnesses. Dogs with severe gastrointestinal signs may also need abdominal X-rays to rule out other causes of these signs.

How to Treat Hookworms in Dogs

All dogs diagnosed with hookworms should receive veterinary care immediately. Your veterinarian is the best person to advise you on how to get rid of hookworms in dogs. Unfortunately, there are no home remedies for hookworms in dogs and a delay in treatment can have serious effects on your pet. In addition to helping your dog recover quickly, prompt treatment of infected animals decreases the likelihood that other people or animals will encounter infectious hookworms in dog stool.

Hookworm Medicine for Dogs

Hookworms can be effectively treated with a number of common dog dewormers but not all, so it’s worth checking. It is important to remember, however, that these treatments are not effective against all stages of hookworms. Therefore, it is not uncommon for pets to develop an apparently “new” infection after deworming.

Given how common and problematic hookworm infections can be, veterinarians recommend that pets receive regular deworming for hookworms and other intestinal parasites.

In most cases, monthly deworming is accomplished by administering a heartworm preventive that also offers protection against common intestinal worms. Interceptor® Plus (milbemycin oxime/praziquantel), for example, is a tasty monthly chew that treats and controls tapeworm, hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections in dogs while also preventing heartworm disease.

Cost to Treat Hookworms in Dogs

The cost of treating hookworms in dogs can vary significantly, depending on the size of the dog, the severity of the disease, and local pricing factors. While a dog showing minimal signs may require only oral dewormer, a puppy with severe anemia may require hospitalization and blood transfusions. In the case of intestinal parasites, protection is nearly always less costly than treatment.

•  Office visit and fecal parasite testing: $75-$125
• Dewormer to eliminate hookworm infection: $25-$100
• Additional diagnostics and hospitalization (may be required in severely ill dogs): $500-$2,000
• Monthly parasite protection (to prevent heartworms and control intestinal worms): $8-$12/month

Hookworm Prevention in Dogs

Pet parents can take a number of steps to decrease their dog’s likelihood of developing a hookworm infection, including:

• Keep dogs on a leash when outdoors, to minimize the likelihood of the dog finding and eating objects off the ground. This can decrease the likelihood that they will become infected by hookworms in dog stool.
• Pick up dog stool regularly, to decrease the likelihood of environmental contamination.
• Observe community leash laws and restrictions in designated public spaces where dogs might not be allowed, such as children’s play areas.
• Use a monthly parasite protection medication, such as Interceptor® Plus, to control intestinal worm infections, in addition to heartworms.

Interceptor Plus Indications

Interceptor Plus prevents heartworm disease and treats and controls adult roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm infections in dogs and puppies 6 weeks or older and 2 pounds or greater.

Interceptor Plus Important Safety Information

Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Interceptor Plus, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections. The safety of Interceptor Plus has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in lactating females. The following adverse reactions have been reported in dogs after administration of milbemycin oxime or praziquantel: vomiting, diarrhea, decreased activity, incoordination, weight loss, convulsions, weakness, and salivation. In the moment, 68-year-old Lothar Weimann claimed he was fine. Yet, his German Shepherd named Ellie sensed otherwise. Somehow, she knew he was having a stroke before he did. Judging by the bump on his head afterward, Weimann had fallen, so Ellie jumped into action and got the neighbor involved. Thanks to Ellie’s quick thinking, Weimann’s life was saved.

It’s unclear how the dog knew to look for help, but she certainly did the right thing. This situation further proves that the bond between a human and their dog is something truly special.

Something Wasn’t Right

Weimann’s wife wasn’t home when he fell, so he had no one to call for help. As soon as Ellie realized something was wrong with her human, she ran off and opened at least three gates to get to Dan Burton, their neighbor. She barked repeatedly until Burton came out by her.

Assuming the dog was lost, Burton walked back to the house with Ellie. But when he arrived at his neighbor’s home, something felt off. He could tell something was wrong with Weimann, just like Ellie had.

“He’s not his usual self. He doesn’t know my name. It’s almost like, you know, a stroke of sorts,” Burton explained.

However, Weimann didn’t think anything was wrong at the time. He walked around, insisting that he was feeling fine, but Burton tried to get him to sit down and rest. Burton called 911 and explained the situation to them. Within 40 minutes of when the stroke started, help arrived. They rushed him to the hospital as quickly as they could.

Loyal Dog Saves the Day

Unfortunately, Ellie and Weimann’s other German Shepherd named Willy had to be locked away as paramedics took their dad to the hospital. But thanks to Ellie’s quick thinking, Weimann was safe. When Weimann arrived at the hospital, he was conscious and breathing but was soon diagnosed with heart problems and Type 2 diabetes.

Later, doctors confirmed that he had a stroke. Weimann said he is very grateful for Ellie because he might not be alive today without her help.

“A dog is always a very honest, very true kind of character,” Weimann said. “I will always say that dogs are the better humans. It’s good to have them around. If you have a dog, you have a companion for life.”

We never know what our dogs are capable of, but oftentimes, they surprise us. They’ll do whatever they can to keep their humans safe because that’s how much they love us. Ellie truly is a hero!

With many cases in animal rescue, timing is critical. One ticking clock scenario is when rescuers have the chance to save newborn puppies. The first few weeks of a puppy’s life are critical, and proper nutrition is essential to their well-being and growth.

When an abandoned female dog gave birth on the streets in 2020, the people who discovered her knew they had to act quickly if they were going to save the whole family. After birthing a litter of six, the mama dog was utterly exhausted. She didn’t have the strength to care for her new babies.

Sadly, two of those puppies didn’t make it. Rescuers were going to make sure the others avoided that tragic fate.

Poor Mom Doesn’t Trust Her Rescuers

Gathering the dogs proved difficult, with the scared, worn-down mother dog showing signs of aggression towards rescuers. They figured she was abandoned a while ago, though she still wore a collar.

Abandoned dogs often develop fear aggression and anxiety, through no fault of their own. This traumatized mama snapped at rescuers as they worked to collect the pups. They sensed her fear and knew she didn’t trust strangers.

Eventually, though, they got the whole family off the street. The four puppies had a rough start to their lives, but at least they all had each other to lean on.

A Hungry Family Eats Again

Once the rescue provided the mama dog with some proper nutrition and water, she regained her strength. She was then able to feed her puppies the milk they desperately needed. For the first four weeks, their mother’s milk is the only nutrition puppies receive.

With enough food to fill their bellies, the pups, previously unable to fend for themselves at all, eventually grew bigger. Not long after, they opened their eyes for the first time. Mama dog remained “skittish,” but felt much better with food of her own to eat.

If rescuers got to these dogs much later, who knows how many of the puppies would have survived. Not to mention, life on the streets is tough for any adult dog too. This mom was probably starving before she even gave birth to her litter.

Obviously, these puppies are all little miracles, but it’s worth noting that spaying and neutering your dogs helps control the pet population and prevent more precarious situations like this one.

Every year, Curtis Culver and his brother plan a backpacking trip to Grand County, Colorado. Culver’s dog, Stella, usually tags along. This trip was the 20th year so far, but it was the first year they encountered dangerous weather conditions. The three of them had to evacuate to escape a harsh snowstorm, but when help arrived, Stella bolted in fear. Culver panicked as he was forced to leave her behind.

Being a smart and resourceful pup, Stella survived five days in the snowy Colorado mountains. But when help finally arrived, she was relieved and ready to take the longest nap of her life.

Adventure Gone Wrong

Culver and his brother knew there would be some snow on their adventure. But what was supposed to be three inches turned into six to ten. So, they called for help, and rescue officials came as quickly as they could. But amid all the commotion, Stella ran off in fear. The weather conditions were too risky for Culver to stay and look for the pup.

“My brother and I weren’t confident enough in our fire starting and maintaining abilities in the 18-degree weather forecast,” Culver said. “It was just the emptiness you feel inside knowing you are not leaving with all the lives you came with.”

So, the search and rescue team brought the brothers to safety but had to leave Stella behind. Then, after necessary preparations, the team returned to the mountain and started hiking the 14-mile trail, looking for Stella along the way.

Stella Protects Herself

It took rescuers about four hours to reach the campsite Culver had stopped at. Five days after Stella ran off, the team found her not far from the campsite. She seemed to be doing well despite all she’d been through.

When Culver saw her for the first time in five days, he was overjoyed. He rushed over to her and showered her with hugs and kisses. Now, she’s back in the comfort of her home, getting pampered as much as possible. She’s also getting plenty of well-deserved rest.

“I love her,” Culver said. “If I could take her everywhere I go, I would, honestly.”

While Stella was alone, she was wearing a backpack that had her food and snacks inside. Culver believes that she found a way to access the food during her time alone. It’s amazing what dogs can do when faced with a tricky situation!

September is National Service Dog Month. It is a time for raising awareness and showing appreciation for the extraordinary work service dogs do every day.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) are honoring Julian King and his beloved service dog, Mocha, this month for their dedication to the community of Coos Bay, Oregon. Over the past nine years, the pair has visited just about every hospice and senior living facility in the area.

Finding A Purpose After Retirement

King is a veteran of the United States Army and the National Guard. After his retirement, he found himself in the VA hospital, where he was visited by several service dogs. The comforting pups inspired him to seek out his own pooch once he was released.

“I needed something to help me get back into the swing of life in the civilian world,” King told KMTR News.

That “something” came in the form of an adorable 7-week-old Lab puppy. King and Mocha have been inseparable ever since. They were soon asked to join the Furry Friends Therapy Dog Organization, where Mocha received her service training.

“Doing all of this is kind of like paying it forward but also paying it all back,” King says, “for the times that somebody shared their therapy dog with me.”

Making A Difference, One Community Member At A Time

At Furry Friends Therapy Dogs, volunteers and their certified therapy dogs visit local schools and health care facilities. According to their website:

It has long been demonstrated that the comforting interaction between animals, dogs in particular, and humans have lessened, and even alleviated, some of the many afflictions associated with aging, depression, poor health, hospital stays or confinement. It is our belief that even brief visits and contact with gentle dogs have actually contributed to the mental well being of many individuals.

While visits have become more difficult over the past 18 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, King and Mocha are determined to serve their community any way they can. After all, King knows firsthand just how healing the touch of a therapy dog can be.

“When she goes to visit her people, when she’s in there they are much less stressed. Everybody wants to pet her and it’s just a soothing feeling to feel a nice dog, and one that’s going to behave. They get relaxed.”
