Among these extraordinary animals, one tiny teacup poodle named Nala has proven to be a true beacon of hope and connection. Her story is a heartwarming testament to the incredible bonds animals can form with people, particularly those in need of companionship. At a nursing home in Minnesota, Nala has touched countless lives with her unique and selfless mission, spreading joy and solace wherever her little paws take her.
Nala’s story began when her owner, Doug Dawson, decided to bring her to work at the Lyngblomsten Care Center in St. Paul. Doug worked at the nursing home, and on that fateful day, he couldn’t have predicted how his five-pound poodle would become a vital part of the residents’ lives.
Rather than staying by Doug’s side as he went about his duties, Nala had other ideas. She wandered through the halls, stopping at random doors and greeting residents with her warm, cheerful presence. That day marked the beginning of a beautiful journey for Nala and the people at the care center.
Nala’s impact was immediate and profound. Her gentle nature and unwavering love quickly endeared her to the residents. But there was something even more remarkable about her: Nala seemed to have an almost supernatural ability to sense who needed her most.
“If you put her down, she’ll pick out the person with Alzheimer’s,” Doug shared in an interview with KARE 11. “She has a way of picking the sick.” It was as though Nala was drawn to those who needed comfort, providing them with a sense of calm and companionship.
Soon, Nala established her own unique routine at the care center. Each morning, Doug would place her in the elevator, and the tiny poodle would embark on her rounds, visiting her “friends” on different floors. Though she needed help pushing the buttons, she clearly understood where she was going.
“She’d rather ride it alone than with people because she knows where she’s going,” Doug explained. The sight of the little dog confidently riding the elevator alone became a daily highlight for staff and residents alike.
Once the elevator doors opened, Nala would make her way through the hallways, stopping to sit on laps, offer cuddles, and bask in the love she received in return. She wasn’t a trained therapy dog, but her instincts and actions rivaled those of any professional. Nala seemed to understand the unspoken needs of the people she visited, creating moments of connection that brightened their days.
Over time, each resident at the nursing home developed a unique relationship with Nala. For 90-year-old Ruth New, Nala was nothing less than an angel. Ruth and others noticed something extraordinary about the teacup poodle: she had an almost spiritual sensitivity, often seeking out those nearing the end of their lives. To many, it felt as though Nala was sent to provide comfort in their final moments.

Letters, gifts, and dog toys poured in from strangers who were inspired by her acts of kindness. Doug marveled at the outpouring of love and support, noting that he hadn’t needed to buy a toy for Nala since the story aired.
As years passed, Nala continued her daily visits, spreading happiness throughout the nursing home. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an unexpected pause to her routine. With restrictions in place, Doug had to temporarily stop bringing her to the facility. The absence of Nala was deeply felt by residents, who missed their furry companion and the joy she brought to their lives.
Even during this challenging time, Doug reflected on the incredible impact Nala had made. “It’s just amazing what this little dog has done,” he said. For the residents and staff, the thought of Nala returning one day kept their spirits high.
In July 2020, tragedy struck when Doug Dawson passed away unexpectedly. The loss of her beloved owner was a difficult moment for Nala, but the little poodle’s story didn’t end there. Doug’s wife, Javon Allen, became Nala’s primary caretaker, and the two provided mutual comfort as they navigated their grief.
“She’s been my rock through this whole thing,” Javon shared. In the face of sorrow, Nala’s steadfast love and loyalty offered a source of strength. She continued to embody the compassion and connection that had defined her time at the nursing home.
