The popular Swedish retailer IKEA launched a line of pet supplies in 2017, but one of their popular products is now being recalled. A water dispenser complete with refillable water tank has been deemed a suffocation hazard, and the company is urging customers to stop using the product immediately.
Sold for $7.99, the product in question was advertised as a convenient way to keep pets hydrated throughout the day. But after two dogs reportedly died from getting their heads stuck in the water tank, the 16,700 water dispensers sold in the U.S. and an additional 17,700 sold in Canada are under a full recall.

The dispensers are no longer available in stores or online, but they were popular items between October 2017 and June 2018. Customers who think they might own one can check the sticker on the bottom of the bowl for the article number 303.775.72. If the numbers match, IKEA is urging customers to stop using the bowl immediately. Recalled products can be brought back to the store for full refunds, and IKEA says customers don’t need receipts or proof of purchase to receive a refund.
IKEA released a statement saying,
“We are deeply saddened by these events and know that pets are important and loved family members for many of our customers.”
The water dispensers are part of the Lurvig collection officially released in 2017. According to IKEA’s website, the collection was designed with help from a veterinarian who specializes in risk assessment. The rest of the company’s pet collection includes essentials like leashes, beds, and toys. All other Lurvig pet products are deemed safe and unaffected by the recall.
