It can be a challenge to find the right kind of treat for training. Some are too crumbly, some are too hard, and others are full of yucky ingredients that dogs really should not be eating. Here is a list of 10 treats that work well for training your dog and are good for him too.
#1 – Chicken
Plain cooked chicken is a great training treat. Dogs love it, it’s inexpensive, and won’t harm them. You can also make the treat whatever size and shape you want, giving you more freedom then store-bought ones.
#2 – Meat Rolls
Since Natural Balance changed their recipes, their meat rolls are now crumbly and not very good for training (not to mention every recipe includes chicken, which some dogs are allergic to!). Thankfully, Red Barn has a made in the USA meat roll that works great. You have a choice of beef, chicken, or lamb. Need fish? Try the FreshPet’s Vital roll, also made in the USA.
#3 – Cloud Star® Chewy Tricky Trainers
These made in the USA treats are great if you want no prep work – just grab and go. Perfect bite-sized treats, they come in Salmon, Cheddar, and Liver flavors. Cloud Star Chewy Tricky Trainers can be found on their site!
#4 – String Cheese
A lot of agility and obedience people love to use string cheese. It’s easy to carry and dogs love it. Just talk to your vet about whether dairy and the fat content is okay for your dog.
#5 – Blue Buffalo Blue Bits
Like the Cloud Star treats, these are small and soft, and perfect for training. They’re also made in the USA and come in chicken, turkey, beef, and salmon.
#6 – Baby Carrots
If your dog is on a diet, carrots are a great training treat option. Baby carrots make it even easier for larger dogs, since you don’t have the grate and chop. The only drawback is they are crunchy, so you have to wait for your dog to finish chewing before training can continue.
#7 – Green Beans
These are another great option for dogs on a diet, without the crunchiness of the carrot. You can freeze them if your dog likes ice cubes, to make them more enticing.
#8 – Fruitables® Skinny Minis
Another great, made in the USA soft training treat, these guys smell so good you may be tempted to try one! They come in unusual flavors like Pumpkin & Mango, Apple Bacon, Bison, and Watermelon to name a few, giving your dog a variety of choices.
#9 – Freeze-Dried Treats
Freeze Dried treats are greats for dogs with allergies, since they are made from a single ingredient, and take away the need to cook. However, they can be a bit crumbly and they are lightweight, so if you have to throw your treats, they do not go far. Still, they are great for a lot of training purposes.
#10 – The Honest Kitchen® Quickies
These tiny dog treats (half the size of a quarter!) are perfect for little dogs. Although they are a hard treat, because they are so small they don’t slow down training. Bonus! They have just one ingredient: dehydrated haddock.
