Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Dog Gets A Special Name

Whether you’re a royals news junkie or you don’t follow stories about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at all, you’re bound to enjoy this one. Yes, that is because it happens to be about their dog. Harry and Meghan adopted an adorable black Lab in 2018, and people have since speculated about the dog’s name. Now two years after she came to live with the royal family, we finally have an answer.

In their best-selling book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, royal journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand reveal that the Lab’s name is “Pula.” This name holds a special meaning to the couple, just as their sweet pup does.

Pula is the official currency of Botswana, the African country where Harry and Meghan traveled when they first started dating in 2016. The trip was a surprise 36th birthday present from Harry. There, away from cameras and scrutiny, the two fell deeply in love. They also returned to Botswana the following year to work with Elephants Without Borders, a conservation group.

Pula means “rain” in Setswana as well. It hardly rains down there, so many locals consider rain a valuable blessing. It’s said as a way to wish others well. What a sweet way to honor a dog!

The Royals’ Love Of Dogs

The royals have long been a dog-loving family. When you think of the Queen, you probably also think about her famous Corgi entourage. Prince William and Kate Middleton are parents to a Cocker Spaniel named Lupo.

In addition to Pula, Meghan and Harry have a rescue Beagle named Guy. When she lived in North America, Meghan rescued a pup named Bogart who now lives happily with friends of hers. The Duchess of Sussex has since deleted her Instagram, but she used to post photos of “her boys” often.

The former actress has always been an animal lover. As a royal, Meghan put her support behind welfare organization The Mayhew Animal Home in 2019. In a special forward in the organizations annual review she wrote:

“As a proud rescue dog owner, I know from personal experience the joy that adopting an animal into your home can bring.”

Mayhew does more than just finding homes for homeless dogs. They also offer assistance to dog parents who need support. It’s an organization that focuses on the needs of the community as a whole.

Pula and Guy probably have the best lives doggies could ask for. But they also inspire their parents to give back to other animals and animal lovers in need! That’s just the kind of thing our beloved dogs make us want to do.
