For nearly 14 years, British comedian John Bishop has had his dog Bilko at his side. But now, the elderly bull terrier, sadly, has passed away. Bishop, naturally, is heartbroken.
The comedian shared the news in a post on Instagram on June 15, posting a picture of himself cuddling the terrier close to his chest in the sun.
“God, I loved him,” he wrote. “Thank you all from all the family for your kind messages. We will all miss him.”
Bishop also shared a video of his dog running through a field on his Instagram stories with the caption “Where I imagine Bilko to be right now.”
The Doctor Who star then uploaded a black and white picture from Bilko’s final hours onto his story, which he spent with Bishop in the garden at home.
“His last afternoon was spent sitting on the couch watching football then I carried him to the garden and we just sat together,” Bishop wrote. “This is our last picture. He was some friend.”
After posting online about the loss of his best friend, Bishop was showered with words of condolences from people all over the world. Among the celebrities who offered their kind words were tv presenter Mark Wright and the Masked Dancer star Davina McCall.
Bishop also received words of support from his fans, who knew just how much he loved Bilko. One commenter said that Bishop often talked about the dog at his shows.
“I remember being at one of your shows and you talking about him saying he was the only one who was pleased to see you when you came home,” the follower said. “Dogs give us the biggest joy and the biggest heartbreak when they leave. I feel for you.”
According to Yahoo News, the Bishop family adopted Bilko as a rescue dog when he was just one year old. The adorable bull terrier lived to 15.
On Twitter, Bishop shared a heartfelt sentiment about rescue dogs and the love that they can provide. Dogs are truly part of the family — and losing them is so hard to deal with. Luckily, Bishop has all the sweet memories and photos of Bilko that will last a lifetime.
“We were lucky enough to have Bilko with us for almost 14 years,” Bishop wrote on Twitter. “A beautiful soul and I will miss him massively. He saw our children grow from boys to men and was ready to give us all love. Take a chance on a rescue dog and you could be lucky enough to find a best friend, too.”
