With multiple Grammy awards under his belt and over 40 million albums sold worldwide, Lenny Kravitz is a true rock star. Still, rock stars need their bandmates and support team by their side to make it all work. Among the most beloved of those supporting members was Leroy: Kravitz’s rescue dog.
Sadly, after years of love and adventures together, Kravitz announced that Leroy had passed on June 21st, 2020. The “Potcake” rescue dog was 12-years-old.
Kravitz shared a tribute to his best friend on social media, posting photos of the two throughout the years. He wrote:
“Thank you for sharing your life with me. You blessed me with unconditional love while watching me go through it all. You were next to me during my best and my worst. We circled the globe over and over together, teaching each other what we could.”
Kravitz spends much of his year living in the Bahamas, on a small island called Eleuthera. His time there and love for the place are likely what led him to Leroy.
Kravitz affectionately refers to Leroy as a Bahamian “Potcake,” his unique breed. Potcake is a Bahamian word for the leftover food remaining at the bottom of a traditional pot of rice mix. People will feed the potcake to stray dogs around their properties.
Dogster describes the distinct mutt breed’s history:
“The Potcake became a designated breed known as the Royal Bahamian Potcake in the Bahamas in the late 1970s. Today, the Potcake is making its way into the U.S. and gaining in popularity thanks to the efforts of American groups such as the Royal Bahamian Potcake Rescue.”
Kravitz closes his farewell to Leroy with this:
“You were the best. A true Bahamian Potcake. Jojo and I are missing you deeply.”
The Jojo Kravitz refers to in his message is his other Potcake rescue dog, adopted in 2016. Hopefully, she can provide her dad with some much-needed support right now.
Love For Leroy And Lenny
Everyone, even us non-celebrities, can relate to the pain of losing a dog. Fans of Kravitz jumped into the comments to offer words of support:
“You gave him the most wonderful life, but he had to run on ahead. May the memories give you comfort, Lenny.” – Connie Donaldson via Facebook
“11 years. I can only imagine the memories you have with him. My condolences.” – @kravitzlegion via Instagram
And of course, there were also some pretty famous commenters, with Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz, and D’Arcy Carden offering condolences as well.
Losing a dog hurts and everyone heals differently. Leroy clearly lived a wonderful life with his dad, and he will be greatly missed by him and fans alike.
