The heart has no logic – and it was the only thing that made sense when we heard about 23-year-old Joel Carpenter’s amazing tale. When Portland resident Jeffrey Carpenter first noticed a stunning Border Collie-Husky mix named Sadie on a website, he instantly fell in love!
Joel knew that spending his last dime on a trip to see Sadie was worth it, so without any second thoughts, he booked the flight!

Joel had spent $300 on a one-way ticket, and he was now broke. He couldn’t afford to buy a return ticket, so he simply took Sadie from the shelter and began “walking” home with his new favorite companion in his arms. With Sadie at his side, the dedicated father had faith that everything would work out during their 1,500-mile trek.

Joel spent an entire week traversing by foot and low-cost transport, but only managed to amass about 700 miles; part of the issue was that he limited his walking hours each day to reduce strain on Sadie. With 800 more miles to go, Joel turned to online fundraising as a last resort and shared his story–which included being homebound–with the community.
