China’s Military Reveals Robot Dog Armed with a Rifle

In a recent military drill with Cambodia, China showcased a robotic dog equipped with an automatic rifle, bringing scenes reminiscent of the “Black Mirror” series to life. This demonstration marks a significant step in the use of robotics in modern warfare settings.

During the “Golden Dragon 2024” military exercises, the Chinese military displayed the capabilities of a robot dog that could significantly alter how urban combat operations are conducted. According to a video released by China’s state broadcaster CCTV, this robotic dog is designed to handle complex movements such as walking, hopping, lying down, and even moving backwards, all controlled remotely by an operator. “It can serve as a new member in our urban combat operations, replacing our (human) members to conduct reconnaissance and identify (the) enemy and strike the target,” explained soldier Chen Wei in the CCTV video.

The demonstration also highlighted other advanced robotic technologies, including a six-rotor drone equipped with an automatic rifle, showcasing China’s diverse arsenal of intelligent unmanned military equipment. These technologies represent an ongoing trend across global militaries to incorporate more robotic and unmanned systems into their operations.

Robotic systems like drones have transformed modern warfare, especially evident since the escalation of conflicts such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These unmanned systems have been pivotal on battlefields, capable of engaging targets on land, sea, and air. They have proven their effectiveness by taking down high-value military assets like tanks and warships, which has allowed smaller military forces to stand against better-equipped adversaries effectively. Last year, China, known as one of the world’s primary drone exporters, imposed export controls on drone technology, emphasizing the need to “safeguard national security and interests.”

The robotic dogs have also gained visibility on China’s tightly controlled social media platforms, signaling their importance to the People’s Liberation Army’s strategic communications. Their presence in joint military exercises with foreign nations suggests that these robots have advanced to a stage ready for operational use. “Usually, a new equipment will not be brought into a joint exercise with another country, so the robot dogs must have reached a certain level of technical maturity,” noted an expert in a quote from the Global Times.
