When Blind Deaf Dog Responds To Someone Loving Her

Sissy (also known as Sister) was a dog burdened with both blindness and deafness. She faced immense challenges in her daily life. Her disabilities not only made her existence more complex but also dampened her chances of adoption due to common misconceptions and avoidance by potential adopters. Despite her sensory limitations, Sister possessed an indomitable spirit. Her ability to navigate the world primarily through her keen sense of smell was evident when Rocky Kanaka, a renowned Pet Rescue Advocate, visited her at a California shelter. To his surprise, Sister approached him, tail wagging, a clear sign of her joy at having company.

Sister’s life had been a series of unfortunate events; abandoned twice, she carried the scars of neglect—fleas, dirt, and scratches marred her fur. Alexis, a shelter staff member, shared her harrowing tale with Kanaka, detailing her repeated abandonments and the confusion that clouded her world. The reasons behind Sister’s condition were speculative. She might have been born with her disabilities, or perhaps they were the result of health issues or environmental toxins. Understanding her specific needs was crucial for the shelter staff to provide appropriate care.

In spite of her hardships, Sister’s demeanor remained gentle and affectionate, her desire for human connection undimmed. A touching episode in her journey occurred when Michelle, a compassionate individual, donated toys that had belonged to her recently deceased dog, Oscar. Although Sister was initially perplexed by the toys, her subsequent exploration—licking and sniffing them—was a sight of pure joy.

Kanaka, moved by Sister’s situation, decided to enhance her day with some treats. Her sharp olfactory senses led her to revel in the simple pleasure of tasting them. This gesture was not just about feeding her but about affirming her presence in a world that often overlooked her. As Kanaka prepared to leave, he offered Sister more treats, which she eagerly accepted. Her final act of sniffing and licking Kanaka was her way of saying goodbye when it was time for Kanaka to leave.
