Dogs can’t resist the savory flavor of beef, which is why many dog parents might consider buying dog treats in bulk. Yet, a popular dog treat brand at Sam’s Club has recently been pulled off the shelves for containing metal fragments. Any dog parents who have these snacks stored on their shelves are urged to stop giving them to their dogs right away.
Metal fragments could cause blockages, cuts, or digestive problems in dogs who consume them. So, Sam’s Club members should steer clear of this canine beef stick brand until the problem is resolved.
What Products Were Recalled?
Sam’s Club issued a recall for their 2.2-pound packages of Member’s Mark Beef Sticks Dog Treats. They have been sold at Sam’s Club since March 2021, and supplies from all months since then are included in the recall. The UPC is 19396-80473.
“As a precautionary measure, Sam’s West, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Member’s Mark Beef Stick Dog Treats due to the potential presence of metal material. The recall was initiated across all Sam’s Clubs following a limited number of customer contacts,” Walmart wrote in a statement.
How Does Metal End Up in Dog Treats?
The manufacturing process for dog food and treats might cause metal fragments to get mixed in with the consumables. For example, chopping the ingredients with a metal blade could result in metal in the food. Not cleaning the production area well enough could also cause metal pieces to contaminate the products. If this happens, companies recall all products as a safety precaution.
Symptoms of dogs who ingested metal can vary greatly. Some signs may include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pacing, appetite loss, increased drooling, and personality changes. In extreme cases, it could lead to seizures or blindness. If your dog displays any unusual behaviors after eating these treats, take them to the vet right away.
Metal contamination happens occasionally in the dog food industry, including past recalls from Pedigree and Blue Buffalo.
What to Do with the Affected Products
If you find any Member’s Mark Beef Sticks in your home, do not feed them to your dog. Instead, discard the products or return them to your place of purchase for a full refund. If you have sold or gifted these products to someone else, please alert them of this recall.
