Haley McCormack was heading for the porch of her Davidson County, Tennessee home when suddenly her dog Arlo sprang into action to save her. A poisonous copperhead snake hiding in the corner by the stairs escaped Haley’s attention. Arlo leaped at the snake as it reared back to strike and grabbed it by the tail, shaking it back and forth.

Arlo saved his human from the snake, but he was bitten in the face three to four times. Arlo was taken to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Nashville, where he received anti-venom, pain medication, and CBD oil. His neck and face were both swollen significantly; however, he is recovering well and is expected to recover fully.

“To think how much loyalty, and love he had for me, to risk his own life for mine, it’s really special,” McCormack told WTVF. “We’re both lucky to have each other for sure.”

Unfortunately, according to the hospital Arlo wasn’t the only dog treated at BluePearl Pet Hospital with a snake bite that day. In their region, according to the animal hospital, they’ve already seen over a dozen snakebite cases this summer alone.

Henry the Golden Retriever was walking alone in obvious distress. Police officers discovered him and were stunned—not only was Henry homeless and in need of immediate care, but he also had a tumor that nearly doubled his weight. For a tumor to gain 46 pounds indicated that Henry had been neglected for an extended period of time. The cops could not comprehend what he had gone through.

Image/Story Source Credit: YouTube Video – Inside Edition

The tumor was so enormous that he couldn’t even use the toilet properly. His condition was distressing. The cops knew they had to act fast, and it had to be done right away. Various veterinarians refused to operate on Henry because they considered the risk too great. Then, finally, they found a veterinarian who was willing to take a chance on the deserving dog.

Image/Story Source Credit: YouTube Video – Inside Edition

Although the operation was costly, charitable donations covered it. There was no longer an excuse for any dog owner to let a tumor get so big. Even if medical treatment proved prohibitively expensive, there were programs in place to assist people with financial difficulties or other problems such as homelessness or domestic violence. Henry’s owners were just plain cruel.

Police determined that Sherri Haughton of Newport Beach was Henry’s original owner after further research. However, she claimed care for him as a stray and that he was already carrying the massive tumor. Officers saw right through her tale, charging her with animal cruelty and neglect, as well as obstruction of justice for providing false information to the medical facility.

Image/Story Source Credit: YouTube Video – Inside Edition

Nothing short of a miracle occurred when Henry changed his ways. So many people wanted to abandon him, but the officers who knew he was a real doggie warrior wouldn’t let them.

The Rottweiler is a strong, noble, and loyal dog. No matter how intimidating they may look to others, Rottie parents know these dogs are just big playful sweethearts.

Unfortunately, the Rottweiler breed is predisposed to certain medical conditions. While these health issues can be expensive to treat, you may be able to cover the high costs if you invest in pet insurance for your dog early.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to choosing the right pet insurance plan for your beloved Rottie. This guide will help you select a plan that covers everything you want it to, so you can be there for your dog when they need you most.

Compare The Top 9 Pet Insurance Plans for Your Rottweiler Using our Free No-Obligation Quote Tool below

The simplest way to compare pet insurance prices is to use our tool below. The comparison tool will show you quotes from the top 9 pet insurance carriers, including Trupanion, Pets Best, Lemonade, ManyPets, FIGO, HealthyPaws, Prudent Pet, Spot, and Embrace pet insurance.

How Much Does Pet Insurance for a Rottweiler Cost?

Below are some sample pet insurance plans for a 1-year-old male Rottweiler using the zip code 75001 (Texas) as an example.

Ultimately, your plan’s premium will depend on several factors, including your dog’s age, size, and breed, as well as where you live. You also want to know what type of coverage your plan has and if it will help with Rottweiler-specific health problems. Let’s get more into those medical conditions and how much you can expect to pay to treat them.

Common Health Problems Associated With Rottweilers

Hip Dyslplasia in Rottweilers

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint, and hip dysplasia causes malformation of the two components. That makes it difficult for your dog to walk, and the chronic laxity can cause abnormal wear, which leads to osteoarthritis.

Many large breed dogs, like Rottweilers, suffer from hip dysplasia. The earlier you have your dog diagnosed, the better their outcome will be. Pet insurance often covers annual exams.

Elbow Dysplasia in Rottweilers

The term elbow dysplasia refers to several conditions affecting a dog’s elbow joint. 38.8% of Rottweilers in an Orthopedic Foundation for Animals study suffered from elbow problems.

Similar to other orthopedic conditions, early treatment can make a world of difference in preventing pain and, in extreme cases, paralysis.

Entropion in Rottweilers

Usually an inherited condition, Entropion is common in the Rottweiler breed. Entropion occurs when the eyelids roll inwards, causing your dog’s eyelashes and facial hair to rub against their cornea. Entropion can lead to corneal ulcerations, scarring, discomfort, and impaired vision if not treated.

Osteosarcoma in Rottweilers

Also known as bone cancer, osteosarcoma is a common health issue seen in Rottweilers. An estimated 5-12% of Rottweilers will develop bone tumors. These tumors can develop anywhere along their skeleton but most commonly appear above the shoulders and on limbs.

While dogs can develop osteosarcoma at any age, most diagnoses occur around age 8. Surgery can save your dog’s life, but unfortunately, it’s not guaranteed to.

Sub-Aortic Stenosis in Rottweilers

This is a genetic deformity where an abnormal ridge of tissue forms underneath the aortic valve, causing a blockage of blood flow. When the heart has to work harder, it creates a heart murmur.

If not treated, sub-aortic stenosis could progress and even lead to sudden death.

Typical Costs Of Treating Health Issues In Rottweilers and How Pet Insurance Can Help

If left untreated, certain conditions can result in long-term consequences, which ultimately make them more expensive to manage later. Knowing the signs and symptoms of these conditions common in Rottweilers can help you catch them early. When in doubt, take your pup to the vet to have them diagnosed.

Many of the health issues listed above can be very costly to treat, especially when surgery is required. Here are just some sample veterinary expenses:

  • Hip Dysplasia Costs: The cost of surgery for hip dysplasia can range from $4,000 to $6,000 per hip. Surgical options include Triple Pelvic Osteotomy, Femoral Head Osteotomy, and Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis, all costing thousands of dollars.
  • Elbow Dysplasia Costs: The total cost of treatment depends on the “grade” (severity) of dislocation. Surgery will cost you, on average, $1,500-$4,000. You’ll also be paying several hundred to thousands of dollars for diagnostic X-rays.
  • Entropion Costs: The condition can be permanently corrected with surgery, ranging from $1,100 to $2,000.
  • Osteosarcoma Costs: X-rays will definitely be required to diagnose the condition, and urinalysis can determine if the cancer has spread. As I mentioned, surgery is only somewhat successful at saving an affected dog’s life. Because these tumors are so aggressive, your dog may need chemotherapy to treat metastasis. In other words: this is a very expensive medical condition (meaning costs extending past $10,000.)
  • Sub-Aortic Stenosis Costs: Diagnosing this condition will require one or all of these tests: chest radiographs (X-rays), electrocardiography (ECG), and an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart). These each cost hundreds of dollars. Medication will be less pricey but necessary indefinitely.

When you choose a plan specific to your Rottweiler’s needs, pet insurance can help cover these high costs. Get a free, no-obligation quote with our easy pet insurance comparison tool and find out much you can save.

What Is Pet Health Insurance And Why Do I Need It For My Rottweiler?

Pet health insurance works very similarly to human health insurance. Your policy quote will range in monthly price, depending on your dog’s breed, age, and where you live. Typically, you’ll spend around $15-$161 per month as a pet parent.

Pet insurance is mainly about peace of mind, knowing you won’t be totally overwhelmed in case of an emergency. Enrolling even when your dog is young and healthy will ensure you have plenty of coverage when they need expensive medical care later. If you choose a plan more suited to your dog’s particular breed, you’ll be more prepared when something happens later on in their life.

Some plans cover accidents and illnesses, while others only cover accidents. Certain plans do cover breed-specific illnesses, and others do not. It all depends on what type of coverage you choose. With our free pet insurance comparison tool, you can get quotes from multiple insurance companies with no obligation to commit.

Whatever plan you choose, you’ll feel better knowing you can take care of your dog when they need you most. Plus, you won’t have to suddenly shell out thousands of dollars. Learn more about how pet insurance works here.

Common Questions About HealthyPaws Vs. Prudent Pet

Coverage Amounts: HealthyPaws vs. Prudent Pet

HealthyPaws offers unlimited coverage with their plans, while Prudent Pet allows you to choose plans with unlimited coverage or a $10,000 cap. Of course, unlimited coverage provides the ultimate financial protection, but a plan with a coverage cap will save you money on your monthly premium.

Multi-Pet Discounts: HealthyPaws vs. Prudent Pet

Prudent Pet offers a multi-pet discount, so you can cover all the furry family members on one plan and only pay one monthly premium. HealthyPaws does not offer a multiple pet discount at this time. But the upside of a single pet plan means tailored coverage for each pet’s specific needs.

What are the Reimbursement Amounts for Prudent Pet vs. HealthyPaws?

Prudent Pets’ reimbursement options are 90%, 80%, or 70%. HealthyPaws offers 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, or 50% as reimbursement options. And here’s something to remember, the higher your reimbursement, the higher your premium.

What is the Annual Deductible for Prudent Pet vs. HealthyPaws?

HealthyPaws’ deductible options are $100, $250, $500, $750, or $1,000. Prudent Pet offers deductible options of $100, $250, $500, or $1,000. Another thought to keep in mind when choosing coverage—the higher the deductible, the lower your premium will be.

Does HealthyPaws or Prudent Pet Offer a Wellness Plan for Preventative Care?

At this time, neither Prudent Pet nor HealthyPaws offers a wellness option that covers preventative care like annual exams, dental screenings, and vaccines. But even without the preventive care options, either company will help save you big when illness or injury strikes.

Who is Cheaper: HealthyPaws or Prudent Pet?

In our example quote, HealthyPaws offered more affordable pricing than Prudent Pet when comparing plans for a 1-year-old 30lb. mixed-breed dog based on Texas zip code 75001. However, keep in mind that your location, dog’s age, breed, gender, and other factors significantly affect your pricing. The best way to know whether Lemonade or Trupanion is cheaper is to run a comparison quote here.

The Bottom Line: Who is Better, HealthyPaws or Prudent Pet?

Overall, we give an edge to HealthyPaws for significantly more affordable pricing when considering plans with maximum annual coverage. In Prudent Pets’ favor, they offer a multi-pet discount, so they may save you money when insuring more than one pet. Both companies are very reputable and popular with iHeartDogs readers, with HealthyPaws receiving 4.4 out of 5 stars and Prudent Pet receiving 4.5 out of 5 stars.

[44] HealthyPaws Pet Insurance Customer Reviews (2022)

iHeartDogs surveyed our readers in 2022 about their experience with HealthyPaws and other major pet insurance providers.

Overall HealthyPaws received a 4.4 out of 5 rating:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Pro: Easy to submit claims, quick turnaround time on payments. Con: Price goes up each year - HealthyPaws review by Jennifer, Canton

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - They have no max payout and claims are processed w/in a couple days! - HealthyPaws review by April, Powhatan

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I have never had a problem with a claim being paid promptly or as I thought it should be (and there have been a lot). My rate has really gone up…more than I would have expected but I have had (and continue to have due to allergies) many claims so it is still worthwhile. - HealthyPaws review by Marcie, Madison

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I Like they have always reimbursed me for treatments for both my dogs. No dislikes . - HealthyPaws review by Susan, Petaluma

⭐⭐⭐ - When one of our dogs died 2 winters ago I called Healthy Paws right away to cancel the insurance policy for him. I made it clear that we still had 2 other dogs who were to continue coverage. However, about a week later I found out that all 3 dogs had been cancelled. It took me numerous phone calls, emails, letters, inquiries before the 2 living dogs got reinstated. Luckily the dogs did not experience any health issues during that time. Healthy Paws said that they would not be covered til they were again under coverage. The company did not act overly concerned or sorry for the error. Continue to search for other options. - HealthyPaws review by Leatha P., Colorado Springs

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - they keep raising premiums, as your dog gets older, even when you do not file a claim. And they are suppose to raise them when vet cost go up. - HealthyPaws review by Tony, Philadelphia

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Always been easy to work with, file claims, and get reimbursed 😍 - HealthyPaws review by Linda, Lenoir City

⭐⭐ - They randomly seem to increase the premiums. I don’t like a lot of the policy’s like if you get referred to a specialist they won’t pay for the exam. I’d probably leave them but now I have a dog who’s been having issues and it’s harder to move. I won’t use them again with a new puppy for sure. - HealthyPaws review by Tory, Ithaca

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Premiums go up even though I’ve never used it - HealthyPaws review by Ann, Ormond Beach

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Easy to file claims and they respond quickly. I understand what is covered and what isn't. - HealthyPaws review by HELENE, Palos Hills

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Quick payment response - HealthyPaws review by Marilyn, Santa Barbara

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Able to pick the coverage I want. Payments are fairly fast. - HealthyPaws review by Joyce, Novato

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Need to pay for yearly exams and dental cleanings. - HealthyPaws review by Kelly, Wrightsville

⭐⭐⭐ - I like the price. I don’t like the fact that I have to pay upfront and then get reimbursed. I want an insurance that will pay the veterinarian directly, like human health insurance. Why do I even have insurance if I have to pay the vet and if I don’t have enough to cover the cost, I will have to put my dog down. This doesn’t make sense. I should just put the money into an account and only use it for emergencies. - HealthyPaws review by Colette, Deerfield Beach

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - No arguments over what vet charges - HealthyPaws review by Case, Vacaville

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Easy to upload claims through the app and they are quick to provide reimbursement. - HealthyPaws review by Karen, West Roxbury

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Nothing to dislike yet. - HealthyPaws review by Amy, Sonoma

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Pay you back quick - HealthyPaws review by Bill, Philadelphia

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Very quick with reimbursements. - HealthyPaws review by , Salem

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I love how easy it Is to use and everyone is so friendly. I’m honestly annoyed at the fact my rates have increased a cumulative of over $50 in the past two years… even my car insurance hasn’t gone up by that much. However, the rate I pay is lower that what other companies would offer if I were to sign with them now. - HealthyPaws review by Catherine, Los Angeles

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Easy to file claims - HealthyPaws review by Debbie, Jefferson

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - HealthyPaws review by Jo, Hingham - The app was up dated and now doesn’t work properly taking a picture of the invoice - HealthyPaws review by Andrea, Olympia

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Fast turnover for claims. Had the last one close in one day. Great customer service reps. - HealthyPaws review by Krystelle, Antioch

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - It was the highest rated on several surveys and they did send me a check pretty quickly but they are expensive and so I only have my older, bigger dog covered since the fee has gone up a lot. - HealthyPaws review by J.T., Morgan Hill

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Monthly premium is not the cheapest but they have been a fantastic company! They process claims quickly and have not denied any claim (no preexisting conditions and I only send claims that are allowed per the contract) - HealthyPaws review by Janet, Unknown

⭐⭐⭐ - Coverage is good but monthly cost has almost tripled in the 6 years we’ve had it with no major claims. What started as a reasonable rate is now ridiculous for a 6 year old dog and in comparing other companies with the same coverage they are all about the same overpriced rate. - HealthyPaws review by , Brooklyn

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - There is no cap and reimbursement is super fast. - HealthyPaws review by Cindy, Milwaukee

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Healthy Paws has excellent customer service. My claims have all been settled and funds received within a week. I have 2 dogs, both are insured, both have had several claims. My 10-year-old has copper storage disease. Healthy Paws has paid every claim for her disease quickly and with no extra paperwork other than an itemized paid invoice. I highly recommend them. - HealthyPaws review by Lace, Palm Bay

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - They have paid quickly and without issue. Claims are easy to file.
I recommend purchasing pet insurance as early as possible because any issues your pet is diagnosed with prior to having them insured will be determined to be a pre existing condition and not covered by the insurance company. - HealthyPaws review by Heike, Portland"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I love the 90% return. I dislike after an update on the app, I can no longer use it to take a clear picture of an invoice for submission. - HealthyPaws review by Andrea, Olympia

[5] Prudent Pet Insurance Customer Reviews (2022)

iHeartDogs created surveyed our readers in 2022 about their experience with Prudent Pet and other major pet insurance providers.

Overall Prudent Pet Insurance received a 4.5 out of 5 rating:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - This was my first time purchasing pet insurance and Pati was a big help! She explained everything in an easy to understand way and was there to answer all my questions. Would highly recommend! - Kyla

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Great Customer Service- While searching for pet insurance, I looked into and called multiple services. Stephanie Toppel was really great at answering all of my questions by responding right away and giving me a straight and honest answer. Pet insurance has a lot of ins and outs to it and I now feel very comfortable that I choose the best company for me. - Kari

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - We just signed up with Prudent Pet and are already extremely impressed with them. I got quotes from 6 different pet insurance companies and I love the fact that Prudent is one of the very few that offer preventative care as well. We have a big family so every penny counts- including annual exams, shots, etc because it all adds up! I got a quote on Sunday afternoon from their website and first thing Monday morning a customer service representative called me to follow up on my quote. None of the other companies did that at all whatsoever. She also spent 45 minutes on the phone with me explaining every detail of the coverage with me and letting me know my options. She answered every question I could think of and was so patient and friendly about it despite me taking up so much of her time with my endless inquiries. She made me feel right at ease. I’m really excited for my dog’s new coverage we can’t wait to see how it all works out. I feel relieved that now I don’t have to worry about some expensive bill coming up that we can’t afford. This makes it much easier on our family and gives us a peace of mind that we can give our dog quality care at any time. - Alexandra

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - We just purchased our policy so I can’t review on the coverage or claims process, but customer service was exceptional. Patricia Ostaszewski was great and assisted us with all of our questions and concerns and set up the policy for us. I do wish the policy listed more details regarding coverage. - Ariel

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I just bought this plan. So far no problems. The only thing was after I applied the info said I would get an email for me to set up my password, I didn’t get one so I called and they told me what to do. Everything ok now. - Patricia

Firefighter adopts puppy

Firefighter Mike Thawley has been saving lives in more ways than one. He has a soft spot for dogs in need, so when the Sacramento Fire Department rescued a Pit Bull puppy near a debris fire, Thawley knew there was more he could do to help them. Five years ago, he fostered and adopted a Pit Bull that was saved by Sacramento firefighters. So, he decided to do it again!

The tiny puppy is now living his best life with Thawley’s family, but his journey to get there wasn’t easy. Thawley hopes this pup’s story will help end harmful Pit Bull stereotypes.

Puppy Saved From Fire

The innocent puppy, now named Loki, was found near a debris fire. Despite being close to the flames, the pup didn’t have any injuries after. So, the firefighters sent him to the Front Street Animal Shelter to help him get adopted.

Loki’s story touched Thawley, so he chose to foster him through the shelter until the dog found his forever home. The firefighter had done something similar in the past. Five years ago, he fostered his Pit Bull named Chunk, who was chained to a fence and had mange when she was rescued. So, he wanted to provide comfort for Loki just like he had for Chunk.

However, it didn’t take long for Thawley to fall in love with Loki. After a few weeks of fostering, he decided to adopt the puppy and welcome him into the family.

“He will be adopted, and he will have a big sister named Chunk because Loki will be living with us,” Thawley said.

A Forever Home!

Thawley named the pup “Loki” after the God of fire. The Sacramento Fire Department posted a video of Thawley talking about how Loki stole his heart. In the video, Loki seems to adore his new big sister. But he has a lot of energy to keep his family on their toes!

While the family loves all dogs, Thawley adores Pit Bulls most. Since they’re often unfairly judged, he advocates for them and shows the world how wonderful they can be. They deserve love just as much as any other dog.

“He’s a tri-color pit bull mix, a breed that is misunderstood, but definitely one of the most family-friendly and loving breeds out there,” Thawley said.

The Sacramento firefighters did an amazing job saving Loki and Chunk. And Thawley saved them again by opening up his home to them. Sometimes, all a dog needs is a little love and support to thrive!

Dog stays by casket

Death is a difficult thing for anyone to grasp. But while humans understand the concept of death, dogs likely don’t know why humans and animals disappear. One dog called Lessie, also referred to as Lassie by some sources, didn’t know how to cope with her human’s death. She shared many years of her life with her human father, so she didn’t understand when he disappeared one day.

However, when she attended his funeral, she could tell that he was in the casket. The confused and heartbroken pup stayed by the coffin for the entire service and refused to part with it afterward.

Hearse after funeral
Facebook

The Most Devastated Family Member

Lessie’s story gained lots of attention on social media once a photo of her began circulating. It showed her sitting in the back of a vehicle right beside her dad’s casket. Even after a beautiful funeral, poor Lessie still didn’t understand he was gone. She wanted to keep sitting beside him forever.

Sweet Lessie rode in the back of the hearse all the way to the cemetery where her human was going to be buried. She’s heartbroken to go on in life without him, but it’s clear that she loved him more than he could ever know.

Facebook

The funeral directors at Onoranze Funebri GF in Italy assured everyone that this event wasn’t staged. Lessie surprised everyone with her emotional reaction, so they let her spend as much time near the casket as possible.

Time to Say Goodbye

Sadly, that ride in the hearse was the last time Lessie got to be close to her human’s casket. But she’ll have memories of him that will live on for the rest of her life. Her story inspired many people, proving that the bond between a human and a dog is truly something magical. After all, dogs are known to be very comforting during funerals and other difficult times.
