September 2022

Chase, a neglected dog, was subjected to the most unspeakable atrocities for 3 years. Her time was spent in solitude with brief moments of tender moments from her human companion. Over time she became increasingly anxious and her mental health ebbed with no hopes for a comeback. However, we love happy endings and that’s what you’re in for with this story.  Please meet Chase, this is his story!

In a more modern society, some abused dogs have a guaranteed chance for rehabilitation. Chase had been on death row at a crowded shelter until she was saved by an angel. An animal rescuer named Eldad entered the shelter just when Chase was waiting for her turn at the euthanasia table.

Puppy with broken leg rescued

Paw Squadron, an animal rescue organization in Bulgaria, received an emergency call about a puppy who was hit by a car. She was all alone with a broken leg following the incident, and she was terrified. Luckily, a homeless man saw the puppy in pain and wanted to help her. He didn’t have many resources for the pup, but he did what he could to comfort her and help her heal.

The emergency call led rescuers to an abandoned house where the man and puppy were staying. At first, it seemed like no one was home, but then they saw a tiny bit of movement.

Rescuers Save Puppy

The rescuers with Paw Squadron investigated every room of the house with no luck. But then, in the last room they entered, they saw a puppy’s tiny head peek out from a pile of blankets. The puppy hobbled over to the rescuers, and they saw that her injured leg had a wooden splint that the homeless man had made for her.

The homeless man wasn’t home when the rescuers picked up the puppy, but they later found out he was in the hospital. Hopefully, someone who knew him was able to tell him that the puppy was safe. No one knows who hit the poor puppy with the car.

The puppy fell asleep in the car on the way to the vet. She had been through a lot, so she finally felt comfortable enough to catch up on her rest. After a checkup, the vet determined that the puppy was in good shape. Her leg was healing well thanks to the homeless man’s splint. She could walk surprisingly well on her leg, considering everything she went through.

On the Road to Recovery

After the puppy’s vet visit, the rescuers brought her to meet some other puppies at the organization, including a tiny one with which she immediately bonded. While playing with her new friends, she also learned that she loves chewing on shoes, even when people are wearing them. She also discovered the excitement of belly rubs.

With the vet’s approval, volunteers gave the puppy a nice bath, possibly the first one she ever had. She was very well-behaved during the process. She didn’t squirm or make any sounds. After that, her tummy was rumbling, so she got a delicious wet food dinner.

Once she was healthy and ready to start a new adventure, the volunteers helped her find the perfect forever home. This puppy is just one of many they’ve rescued, and they rely heavily on donations during these missions. So, if you’d like to help support Paw Squadron, you can donate on their website.

Cat walks with dog

Meadow and Willow were two inseparable canine companions. The two pups would play together, go on walks together, and snuggle together. So, when Willow passed away unexpectedly in 2020, Meadow became lonely and heartbroken.

To fill the hole in Meadow’s heart, the pup’s family decided to adopt a new friend for her, but this new addition was very different from Willow. Meadow’s family adopted a kitten named Twig. Even though Meadow and Twig are two very different creatures, the two formed a special bond almost instantly. In many ways, Twig acts more like a dog than a cat.

Two Unlikely Friends

From day one, Meadow and Twig were very interested in each other. After their first night together, they were already sleeping with their heads touching. Their human, whose name is Lee, knew that Twig wouldn’t replace Willow, but the kitten brought new joy into Meadow’s life.

Ever since they met, Twig and Meadow have been inseparable. They eat with their bowls side-by-side, and they wrestle gently. At the end of an adventurous day, they cuddle up together to take a nap.

“When they play, you never hear them yelp or cry. So they know how to play with each other in a safe way,” Lee said. “It’s really comforting to know that when I’m not home, that they have each other.”

But one thing that Twig and Meadow didn’t do together was walk. Meadow would go on her daily walks with Lee while Twig watched from the window. Twig always tried to follow Meadow out the door, and he looked sad when he was left behind. So, Lee started thinking of ways to include Twig in their outdoor adventures.

Twig Joins Daily Walks

When Meadow would go outside for her walks, Twig would patiently wait by the door until she returned. To cheer Twig up, Lee started bringing him along on walks too. At first, she carried him, but she knew there had to be an easier way.

Lee ended up getting a bag for Twig so she could easily carry him during walks. He sits in the bag with his head sticking out, admiring all his surroundings. Soon, Twig became a regular part of Meadow’s walking routine.

“Not many people would say that cats and dogs get along, let alone as good as Meadow and Twig do, and they kind of restore hope for humanity,” Lee said. “Like, if a cat and dog can be this sweet to each other, there is really no reason why us humans should struggle.”

According to Lee’s TikTok page, she’s now fostering a puppy as well. Twig and Meadow have welcomed the puppy into their home without hesitation. They’ll likely be sad when the puppy gets adopted, but they’ll always have each other, no matter how many foster animals come and go.

Most people choose their favorite dog breeds based on physical cuteness and desirable personality traits. But veterinarians have a unique perspective. Their work provides a firsthand look at which breeds suffer the most health problems and have less-than-perfect temperaments.

Ben Simpson-Vernon, a veterinarian in Chigwell, England, shares helpful pet tips as Ben the Vet on TikTok. He recently racked up nearly seven million views—and lots of conflicting comments—when he shared a video titled, “5 Dog Breeds I Would Never Own As A Vet.”

Instagram

The topic of “best” and “worst” dog breeds is very subjective. You’d be hard-pressed to find two dog lovers who agree on the top (or bottom) five. What makes Dr. Simpson-Vernon’s video all the more controversial is that he includes some of the world’s most popular pups.

He’s careful to start the video with a disclaimer:

“Remember, it is ultimately my opinion. You may disagree.”

But viewers are still fired up. Let’s see if you agree with the dog doc’s list.

RELATED: The 20 Most High-Maintenance Dog Breeds

5. Chow Chow

Chow Chows are sturdy, loyal, and delightfully fluffy, but as Ben the Vet points out, they can be a lot to handle.

“I’m sure there are some nice ones,” Dr. Simpson-Vernon says. ” But I just find they often don’t have a very nice temperament, they can be really aloof, and they’re often very aggressive at the vet’s.”

He notes that they are prone to eye problems and their broad faces make it difficult to apply a muzzle for safe handling. The doc also points out that the Chow Chow’s “purple tongue can be unnerving.”

4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The American Kennel Club describes the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as “affectionate, gentle and graceful,” with top marks for their love of family and behavior around children and other dogs. Sadly, they are prone to a host of health problems, including heart disease, eye conditions, patella luxation, hip dysplasia, ear infections, and a neurological condition called syringomyelia.

Ben the Vet immediately acknowledges that Cavvies “are the loveliest dogs,” and he’d probably get one himself if they were healthier.

“They have a lot of issues,” he says. “Pretty much all of them get the same kind of heart disease, called mitral valve disease which means they mainly spend their final days spluttering and struggling to breath.”

3. Dachshunds

Dachshunds are adorable, energetic and love entertaining their beloved humans with their playful antics. Unfortunately, one physical trait makes the breed a no-go for Dr. Simpson-Vernon.

The vet describes “sausage dogs” as some of his favorite patients, but one in four suffers from back problems due to their unusually long spines. For some Dachshunds, it’s a simple sprain. For others, it’s slipped discs, paralysis, lifelong pain, and even risky (and expensive) spinal surgery.

There’s “too much potential for heartbreak,” Ben the Vet says.

2. Shar Pei

The AKC states the ideal Shar Pei is “an amalgam of odd physical traits.” These include “a broad ‘hippopotamus’ muzzle; a blue-black tongue; small, sunken eyes with a scowling expression; tiny triangular ears; abundant folds of loose skin about the head, neck, and shoulders; and a tapered high-set tail—all blanketed by a harsh, sandpapery coat.”

These dogs are so wrinkly they have to have their eyelids tacked in place to prevent the lashes from rubbing painfully on the surface of their eyes. Shar Peis are also prone to skin problems and have “tiny, narrow” ear canals that are difficult to clean and medicate.

And these feisty dogs are a challenge for vets in more ways than one:

“They’re often trying to bite the faces off all the staff,” Dr. Simpson-Vernon remarks.

1. Pugs, French Bulldogs & Bulldogs

Dr. Ben cheats a bit when it comes to the number one breed he’d never own. Instead of one particular breed, he lists “any flat-faced or brachycephalic dog breed,” such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs.

“They are so prone to so many problems,” Simpson-Vernon says.

He lists spinal problems, skin issues, eye problems, and the fact that more than half of these flat-faced dogs need C-sections to give birth safely.

“The Cesarian thing is enough of an ethical issue for me to never want to have one,” Simpson-Vernon says.

Not to mention how costly it can be to properly care for a brachycephalic breed.

All pet parents know exactly how much our animals mean to us—so choosing to give up a dog that you adore is probably an absolutely heartbreaking experience.

But a 12 year-old-boy, who was painfully aware of the abuse his dog was suffering at home, acted out of true love and did everything he could to help his sweet pup find a happier life.

Rene with note
Facebook

Despite loving him so much, and considering him his best friend, a young boy named Andrés was forced to make the devastating decision to rehome his dog, Rene.

Why? Because Rene was suffering at the hand of Andrés’ own father. Not only was Rene receiving regular beatings, but he was kicked so hard that his tail had sustained a serious injury.

So Andrés decided that it would be best for him to go behind his father’s back and leave Rene, along with a detailed note explaining why he was choosing to say goodbye, in a box outside of an animal rescue facility. There, Rene would be able to find a new family and live his best life.

Luckily, sweet Rene wasn’t waiting long in the box for the staff at Xollin Animal Refuge to find him. Though, Andrés did pack him his favorite stuffed toy to keep him company. Xollin is an animal rescue organization that helps find homes for animals who have suffered at the hands of humans.

Rene in box
Facebook

“We take care of them and rehabilitate them physically and emotionally so that they can smile again, have confidence in human beings and thus be happier in a new home, through adoption, or in our centre through sponsorship,” said an employee.

Not only did Andrés put his favorite toy in the box with Rene, but he also included a heartbreaking, handwritten note that detailed why he was so willing to make this difficult decision. You may want to grab a tissue before you continue to read. This letter is a real tearjerker.

“My name is Andrés and I’m 12-years-old. My mom and I decided to leave him to you. All of this is behind my dad’s back, because he was thinking of selling him. But he is always beating and kicking the dog. Once he kicked him so hard that his little tail got injured. I hope you can help him and take care of him. Here is a plush toy so he won’t forget me.”

Rene
Facebook

Sadly, not everyone sees animals as members of the family. But brave Andrés was willing to do what it took to get his best friend to safety, even if he knew he’d miss him forever.

Rachel ray canned for digestive issues is good but what is really fantastic in my opinion is The Farmhouse Dog. You order on line and tell them if your breed has any active issues such as stomach, itching, needed weight loss etc. you can do a trial for around 50-60 bucks. It’s sent frozen and it’s proportioned to your breed. We started our five year old on it and he loves it. We have seen an improvement in his weight coat and itching already. Unfortunate side it expensive for a Rottweiler due to their size. We are paying 120 a week. We’re hoping to keep him on it temporarily. When it comes to my rotties I will do anything to help them have a great life. Rottweilers are known for stomach issues such as regurgitation etc. prilosic may help but check with your vet. Good luck.

Primal raw is the best solution . Rabies one and done , no flea and tick use only wonderside spray , puppy shots and done . Give PetMoringa BALACE DAILY . I believe heartworm or flea meds caused my babies seizures and or pancreatitis and passing of blood . She was on Kibble ( burnt food full of synthetics ) then vet put her on science diet ID which is the worst ! Feed poison , treat with poison and you get a slowly poisoned dog . All natural here ! Raw meat , marrow bones . Homemade is best but don’t cook it , you lose all the nutrients. I might sound crazy but I will not lose another to poor diet . Following Cathy’s yorkies tips and suggestions . She specializes in nutrition for dogs

Taste Of The Wild. Mine loves it and zero tummy issues. I had problems with so many brands! Either she couldn’t poop or she never stopped pooping. Also, it’s more filling so after a few days, it takes less food to fill her up. It costs more but since she eats less, the cost is really about the same.

We have had ours on Royal Cannine low fat gastrointestinal for many years now. Keep the dry kibble out for her whenever she wants it and feed the wet canned food twice daily. It has helped. She still has occasional tummy issues but it is much better.PS- i have a VERY finicky eater. Rice, chicken, scrambled eggs. All the usual bland foods you give a little fur baby when not feeling good, she won’t touch. Doesn’t like treats either.

Mine has pancreatitis also and I have tried everything. The best I have found is Cesar. I know it’s probably not the best but we have had less issues with this than the prescription ones.

I make a pot of boiled chicken (shredded), canned carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, brown rice, scrambled eggs and gravy. Bag it up in about 3 cup servings and freeze it, and feed her accordingly. She’s very picky, at least I know what’s in it, she is 8 years old and doesn’t have many teeth, so this works well

Pit Bull abandoned at pet store

Sometimes, the perfect dog for a person is one they didn’t expect. Frank Reyes knew he wanted to adopt a dog at some point, but when someone introduced him to an abandoned Pit Bull, he was hesitant because of harmful stereotypes he had heard. But he decided to give the pup a chance.

The Pit Bull, who was later named Sinatra, was abandoned at a pet store. Despite his heartbreaking past, Sinatra ended up being full of love. Reyes couldn’t deny a special connection between him and the pup. It was meant to be!

Dumped Outside Store

Sinatra’s previous humans showed up at a local pet store and asked to drop him off. The employee explained that they’re a supply store and not a shelter. Instead of driving Sinatra to a shelter or rescue, the owners tied him to a cart return outside the store, and abandoned him.

When Reyes went to the veterinary hospital where Sinatra was being held, he grew nervous as the large dog ran toward him. But once Sinatra got close enough, he rolled on his back to ask for belly rubs. At that moment, Reyes knew they were meant to be best friends.

“It was a lot of trial and tribulations to work with him and get to know him. But once it happened, he was my right-hand man,” said Reyes.

Sinatra was highly food motivated, so Reyes worked that into training. Eventually, he got the gentle pup to be patient with food and complete other tricks. Sinatra ended up being exactly the kind of companion Reyes needed in his life.

A Long, Meaningful Life

Thanks to Reyes’ kind heart, Sinatra had a wonderful life. The two got 11 years together, where they spent countless times cuddling, playing fetch, and going on adventures.

“He was my first dog, and he’s only ever been my first and only dog,” Reyes said.

At around 13 years old, Sinatra started slowing down and not doing well. He wasn’t eating, and he started to drastically lose weight. Reyes tried everything to save him, but it was Sinatra’s time to cross the rainbow bridge. A few days before Sinatra’s passing, the pup went outside to look at a rainbow as if to tell his dad it was time.

Losing Sinatra was one of the hardest moments of Reyes’ life, but he’s grateful they had so many wonderful years together. He even got a tattoo in the pup’s honor. Now, Reyes is helping foster a Pit Bull named Bowser because he knows that love can change a rescue dog’s life drastically.

Rest in peace, Sinatra. You were very loved!
