September 2020

Simon Porte Jacquemus (of the self-named brand) wowed his millions of followers with more than just his designs recently. The French fashion designer just adopted a tiny little puppy named TouTou. Clearly, he’s obsessed, and so is everyone else.

Describing him as a “new member of the family,” the designer shared a photo of little TouTou on Jacquemus’ Instagram. TouTou now has his own page you can follow here. As of yet, there are only three photos there, all extremely cute.

@jacquemus/Instagram

Jacquemus has also shared a few videos of TouTou frolicking around with his adorably tiny waddle. So far, the pup has accompanied both of his dads to their jobs (and seems to love it.) It seems like he’s always hanging out with his family, which is great. Everyone at work seems to love him too!

@mynameistoutou/Instagram

A lot of us are probably all hoping for the same thing – Toutou to appear in fashion editorials. I mean, he really has a look, right? He should have his own campaign, or at the very least his own fashion line.

@jacquemus/Instagram

Following either account on Instagram (@jacquemus or @mynameistoutou) will likely get you access to many more cute photos of TouTou. Right now, he’s only as big as one of their purses, so it will be fun to watch him grow.

What The Fans (And Famous Friends) Have To Say

Since Jacquemus is a major brand, they work with some really high profile people. It’s pretty weird that Instagram just lets us have a little sneak peek at how celebs and influencers interact with each other publicly. But here’s what some had to say about this little doggie:

cutttiieeeee!” – Haim (@haimtheband via Instagram)

“PROMOTE HIM IMMEDIATELY.” – Model/Influencer Jadé Tuncdoruk (@jadetunchy via Instagram)

ok THIS is actually a dog i would voluntarily dogsit” – YouTuber Damon Dominique (@damondominique via Instagram)

Alright, so they might be celebrities of few words (and many emojis.) Ariana Grande and Bella Hadid also threw all the TouTou posts some likes.

@jacquemus/Instagram

Regardless of our follower counts though, us regular Joes and Josephines also fell in love with little TouTou.

Parfait, on attends la collection @jacquemus pour dogo!” (“Perfect, we are waiting for the Jacquemus collection for dogo!”) – @dorianschober via Instagram

All I have to say is, I’d buy whatever TouTou is selling. Congrats to Simon and the whole company on their new best friend!

Being alone can be hard. Especially when we’re forced into solitude at the threat of an illness so new to the world.

The fear and anxiety unleashed by the stress of the 2020 global Covid-19 outbreak has been almost too much to bear at certain moments. But, as dog parents, we know we can make it through anything thanks to our canine family.

And a recent survey conducted about the coronavirus lockdown has shown this to be true!

The University of York and the University of Lincoln surveyed 6,000 United Kingdom residents about their time in Covid-19 lockdown during the months of March through June. And one fact that proved almost universally true?

Animal companions helped their people get through the lockdown.

Cuddling our Companions Made It All a Little Easier

Of the six thousand participants surveyed, 90% reported having companion animals at home. That same percentage said, “their pet helped them cope emotionally with the lockdown”.

Daniel Mills, a professor with the School of Life Sciences at the University of Lincoln and co-author of the study, explained, “This work is particularly important at the current time as it indicates how having a companion animal in your home can buffer against some of the psychological stress associated with lockdown.”

But as dog parents are wont to do, they still worried about their furry darlings. In fact, 68% of participants worried over what would become of their animals if they contracted Covid-19. People also expressed concern over getting their pet medical attention if the need arose.

Though respondents held these worries, they still felt far better having their furry companion at their side. Because as we already know, when we have our dogs with us, we’re never truly alone. Their love encourages us to be the best versions of ourselves because if we aren’t doing alright, how will they be okay?

The Love of Any Animal, Furred, Feather, or Scaled, Makes the World Brighter

The survey also revealed it didn’t seem to matter whether an animal companion was feline, canine, feathered, or scaled. The emotional connection was there all the same.

Lead author, Dr. Elena Ratschen with the Department of Health Sciences University of York said, “We also discovered that in this study, the strength of the emotional bond with pets did not statistically differ by animal species, meaning that people in our sample felt on average as emotionally close to, for example, their guinea pig as they felt to their dog.”

No surprise there! All animals are great!

While the information was assimilated with the recent lockdown in mind, the implications of the survey appear promising when looking at mental health and animal companionship all the way around. “Findings from this study also demonstrated potential links between people’s mental health and the emotional bonds they form with their pets,” according to Dr. Ratschen.

But this survey’s results weren’t meant to create definitive answers about mental health status and animals. But at least it has us talking about the correlation.

As dog lovers, we’ve long known one key to a happier and more productive life is giving love and being loved by a dog. We’re happy the rest of the world realizes this fact too!

Tragically, our dogs are not permanent fixtures in our lives. However, the impression they leave on us is. Some people decide to commemorate this important relationship with something pretty permanent: tattoos.

Julianne Hough and Husky

Dancer and actress Julianne Hough announced her separation from Brooks Laich amid the coronavirus quarantine. They were quarantined in two separate states at the time, and they supposedly realized that they were perfectly fine being on their own. Yet, fans were devastated that the couple was calling it quits. After all, the two have always seemed so good for each other.

As it turns out, fans were right. There was one thing that could help bring these two lovebirds back together: their rescue Husky named Koda.

Are They Getting Back Together?

After a few months apart, sources say that Hough and Laich are now working on their marriage again. They have been spotted a few times together since their separation. Despite trying to keep their relationship details out of the media, fans are eager to know what will happen next with the couple.

“Brooks really still wants to make it work and she’s considering it, but taking her time. He’s open to whatever it will take,” a source claimed. “Julianne likes the idea of freedom but doesn’t want to lose such a good, solid guy. Everyone who knows him knows how grounded and great he is.”

Brooks Laich with Koda
Image: @brookslaich/Facebook

These claims became even clearer when Koda stepped in. The couple adopted the Husky from a local dog rescue in 2018, and they’ve shared a close bond with him, especially after losing their two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. According to the couple’s Instagram stories, they recently went on a vacation together with Koda. Perhaps he’s the one helping bring them back together.

Dogs Heal All Wounds

Hough posted an adorable video of her in the car with Koda. They seem to be on a vacation road trip, likely with Laich. In the video, Koda showers his mom with kisses and presses his head against her as if to give her a “face hug.” She captioned this post saying, “this sweet boy loves his momma.”

In addition to the heartwarming video, Hough and Laich both posted similar images on their stories. Both were photos of Koda with a lake house behind him. There’s no way the dog could be in two places at once, so it looks like Hough and Laich were vacationing together after their separation.

Image: @brookslaich/Facebook

Of course, neither one of them could’ve stayed away from Koda for long. They both clearly love him very much, and the poor pup would be devastated if they split permanently. So, while Hough and Laich are working things out on their own terms, it’s safe to say that Koda had an impact too. After all, he’s a part of their family!

It’s uncertain what the future holds for Hough and Laich, but hopefully, they can work things out eventually. They better give Koda plenty of love and cuddles along the way too.

Possum Before

When you purchase items from the iHeartDogs store, a portion of the proceeds go to GreaterGood. GreaterGood is an incredible organization that uses donations to help dogs in need. Many dogs have been transported away from high-risk areas to find their forever families. One of those dogs is Possum.

Possum is guessed to be a Chihuahua and Dachshund mix. She first lived with a homeless man in Bakersfield, California. Her human was unable to get her spayed, so despite only being two years old, she had countless litters of puppies throughout her life. Eventually, the homeless man knew it was time to give his pup to a family who could treat her better. But that meant she had a long journey ahead of her.

Possum Pregnant

Thanks to a GreaterGood grant, which was funded by the iHeartDogs community, Possum got a second chance. START Rescue transported her out of California to give her a better life. She soon arrived at Oregon Dog Rescue in Tualatin, Oregon. From there, she gave birth to her last litter of puppies. She had five handsome boys and one beautiful girl. From that moment on, she would no longer have to worry about being pregnant ever again.

Possum’s pups quickly got adopted, and she was given the space and support to fully recover from her past. Her transformation is kind of like a Cinderella story. Soon, she looked like a happy puppy instead of an overbred mom. She became even happier when a kind family adopted her and gave her the home she always dreamed of.

Possum Rescued

“Possum is doing wonderful,” said Possum’s new family. “It is hard to put into words the joy she has brought to our family. Even the cat seems to enjoy her company. She does not like to have her picture taken but loves the snow and has two jackets! She is a joy and love personified.”

Thanks to purchases from the iHeartDogs store, many dogs like Possum get a second chance at life. Thank you to all the incredible heroes who have purchased products to save dogs in need!

Cat and Shiba Inus

Kiki is an American Shorthair Cat, but he doesn’t seem to know that. He spends so much time with his three Shiba Inu siblings that he now seems to think he’s one of them. Even when he meets new dogs, he behaves more like a dog than a cat. So, maybe he is just a Shiba Inu in a cat’s body.

Now, Kiki and his siblings have taken over the internet. Many animal lovers have fallen in love with the unique bond that the cat and three dogs share. After all, they really are the perfect family!

Welcoming Kiki Home

At first, Kiki’s parents were hesitant about getting a cat. They had always been a dog family, with three beautiful Shibas. But the dog mom quickly desired a cat too. Unfortunately, her husband just wasn’t a cat person though.

Kitten with Shibas
Image: @saki.ibuki.hazuki/Instagram

“The reason why I wanted to expand our family with a cat rather than a dog was quite simple: I’ve had a cat in the past,” Kiki’s mom said. “But when I told my husband that I wanted a kitty, I learned he wasn’t very fond of cats. I kept at it, but he refused every time.”

With enough begging, Kiki’s mom was finally able to get her way. The couple worked together to find a cat that they both liked. Of course, they wanted to make sure they chose a cat that was compatible with their other furry friends. Kiki seemed like he would be the perfect brother for the three Shiba Inus.

The Odd One Out

Kiki adapted to his new family right away. He instantly bonded with the three dogs and began acting like he was one of them. At first glance, the feline might look like the odd one out, but he thinks he’s no different than his siblings. Even around other dogs, he feels like he belongs.

“I took Kiki and our dogs to a Shiba Inu party,” said Kiki’s mom. “Kiki was getting along with all the dogs just fine, but one of them suddenly started barking at him. Immediately, one of our Shibas, Saki, barked back, protecting Kiki. At that point, I understood they’ve become true companions.”

Kiki also behaves like a dog in many other ways. While cats often wake up at unusual times and make noises in the middle of the night, Kiki sleeps peacefully beside the Shibas. He always rests whenever his brothers do, even if he already had plenty of naps. In fact, the Shibas are also quiet and respectful when their feline brother chooses to nap throughout the day.

It’s clear that these siblings bring out the best in each other. The Shibas help Kiki be kind and social while Kiki teaches them to be loyal. Cats and dogs might be pinned against each other by society, but they can sometimes be the best of friends.

You can keep up with Kiki and his siblings on their Instagram page!

How the popular media mystique of wolf-dogs results in overcrowded shelters
Husky popularity has increased—not a good thing for the breed.

Shelters and rescue groups have seen dramatic increases in the number of homeless Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and other wolfy-looking dogs coming through their doors. Inspired in part by a popular television series, people buy one of these fluffy puppies on impulse (often online) and find themselves in way over their heads. Here, we look at how media popularity has affected these dogs and provide a primer on what Huskies—the breed that’s been most dramatically affected—are and are not.

Originally, people living in the far north bred dogs to, among other things, pull heavily loaded sleds long distances across some of the world’s coldest landscapes. Today, these northern-breed dogs—Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Akitas and other Spitz-type dogs—spend most of their time as companions in a world where pulling a sled for a living is pretty much never required.

Dog neglect

Animal abuse is heartbreaking. It’s impossible for dog lovers to believe that someone would purposely harm an innocent creature. But animal abuse isn’t always that obvious, especially when it involves neglect.

Neglect is a form of animal abuse, and it’s much harder to spot. Some forms of neglect are intentional while others are more subtle. Either way, neglect is just as dangerous as abuse, if not more. Dogs suffering from neglect have to endure long, painful days, weeks, months, or even years. So, it’s important to help these dogs in any way possible.

Animal neglect

Signs of Animal Neglect

Animal neglect can come in many forms. Some signs are so minor that they’re easy to miss while others are right there in plain sight. If there is anything unusual about the dog’s appearance or behaviors, it could be a concern. If you see anything that could potentially be neglectful, take note of it in case you need to report it.

Physical Signs of Animal Neglect:

  • The dog is emaciated with bones visible.
  • Their coat is extremely dirty or matted.
  • Their nails are overgrown.
  • They have untreated wounds.
  • Their collar is tight or embedded around their neck.
  • They have significant hair loss or irritated skin.
  • They’re infested with fleas or ticks.
  • They cannot walk normally.
  • They are showing frequent signs of illness, such as vomiting or diarrhea.

These signs might be concerning, but they’re not a guarantee that a dog is being neglected. Some dogs could be recovering from something, which is why they might look more weak or ill than usual. The best way to tell if these signs are a concern is if they’re accompanied by environmental concerns too.

Dog Chained

Environmental Signs of Animal Neglect:

  • The dog is chained outside for long periods of time.
  • The chain is too tight or twisted, causing a choking hazard.
  • They don’t have proper access to food and water.
  • They don’t have proper shelter during extreme weather.
  • They’re kept in a kennel that’s too small for them.
  • There are too many animals on one property.
  • They’re kept near hazardous objects like garbage, feces, or glass.
  • They bark or whine for extended periods of time, even days on end.

If you spot any of these signs of neglect, it can be heartbreaking. In many cases, the person doesn’t even realize that their actions are slowly killing their dog. So, it’s important to take action before these cruel behaviors get out of hand.

Risks of a Severely Neglected Dog

If a dog is neglected for an extended period of time, they could be at risk of severe health conditions or even death. Of course, it depends on how serious the neglect is. Yet, any lengthened neglect can harm a dog’s health and wellbeing significantly.

Dogs who are left outside without shelter from the weather can suffer slowly and painfully. Heatstroke and dehydration are common concerns for dogs during hot months. Then, frostbite and hypothermia could be risks during cold months.

Skinny dog

Additionally, dogs suffering from untreated wounds could have a slow death. Their wounds could become infected and lead to more serious concerns. Not having enough food and water could also cause prolonged suffering. They could eventually have severe weight loss, muscle loss, and failure of organs if left alone too long.

This means that a dog suffering from neglect could die right beside their “home.” Their death could be caused by something that their human easily could’ve prevented. It’s heartbreaking to think that any human would be okay with treating an animal that way.

Neglect can be just as painful as violent abuse. This is because the pain is long and drawn out instead of sudden. Dogs who are neglected spend most of their time scared and confused, not understanding why their humans aren’t giving them the love and care they need.

What to Do if You See Neglect

You should act quickly if it’s clear that an animal is in trouble. Follow your instinct if you notice signs of neglect. Most places have an animal welfare agency you can contact. Look on their website to find out their rules for reporting animal cruelty and how to report it.

Have as much information ready as possible when you talk to authorities. Of course, you should never enter someone’s private property. However, if you can take photos and videos from a distance, that could definitely help. Having photos of both the animal and their environment can be the best way to get authorities to take action.

Animal neglect outside

You can report the neglect anonymously, but animal abuse cases are more successful if someone is willing to testify. So, you should go about it just like you would with any other serious crime. If you know that someone else has witnessed the abuse, try to get them to speak up too. Sadly, not all people see animal neglect for the severity that it is. Yet, you could save an animal’s life by reporting these incidents.

Punishments for a Neglectful Human

Different locations have different laws when it comes to animal abuse. For example, some states have laws that limit the amount of time a dog can be chained up while others do not. So, the punishment of certain neglect could greatly vary based on where you live.

Unfortunately, many animal neglect cases don’t make it to trial. This is because they are often solved by rehoming the animal. In extreme cases, the abuser will also face sanctions or monetary penalties. Sadly, animal neglect cases are one of the most common calls that animal control receives.

The punishments for the actions also depend on whether or not the neglect was intentional. Some people just don’t know that their actions are wrong, and they don’t mean to harm their dog. But unfortunately, there are also plenty of people who will purposely neglect their animal with the intention of harming them. Both instances will likely be punished in some way, but the severity of the punishment can vary.

Dog alone

Animal neglect is just as severe as violent animal abuse. Both of them put dogs in extreme danger and could lead to death. Thus, it’s crucial for you to contact authorities if you suspect animal neglect is happening near you. Keep an eye out for the signs and gather evidence because you could save that dog’s life.
