July 2021

Stephen Foster works as a part-time maintenance man at a gas station in Dade City, Florida. Since the recent death of his wife of 35 years, Stephen has come to rely on the love and companionship of his little dog, Ollie. The pooch even accompanies him to work, happily watching her dad from the end of a tether.

A few weeks ago, Ollie was hit by a car driving through the gas station parking lot and was left with a broken leg. The vet told Stephen euthanasia was his only option, but he and Ollie were about to meet a guardian angel. Actually, a whole bunch of them!

Image via Facebook/Pasco County Animal Services

An animal control officer with Pasco County Animal Services urged Stephen not to give up hope. The next day, the officer returned with veterinarian Christine Glenn, who transferred Ollie to the PCAS shelter for further care.

“Ollie is a special girl. He is this gentleman’s whole world. And without her he doesn’t sleep well at night. This is his companion since his wife passed away,” Dr. Glenn told ABC Action News.

Image via Facebook/Pasco County Animal Services

Upon examination, Dr. Glenn discovered that Ollie had internal injuries in addition to her broken leg and would need to undergo surgery. The PCAS medical team, along with volunteers from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, went to work repairing Ollie’s ruptured diaphragm. Her prognosis was guarded, but she proved to be a fighter, heading into yet another surgery—this time for her fractured leg—just days later.

With all that under her furry belt, Ollie began the long road to recovery. Stephen visited her in the medical suite every chance he got over the next few weeks. It was clear to all who witnessed their time together that Stephen and Ollie truly love one another.

“Her eyes soften when she sees him, and her little body wags. The love between man and dog is clear, and we at PCAS want to preserve this bond,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook update.

Image via Facebook/Pasco County Animal Services

Finally, the day the pair had been waiting for rolled around. On Thursday, July 29, Ollie was released from the clinic!

She is not fully healed yet, but she is strong enough to spend the remainder of her recovery at home with Stephen—with several follow-ups at PCAS along the way. Once she gets medical clearance, Ollie’s pals at the shelter will provide her with a crate so she can safely accompany Stephen to work once again.

“Ollie means everything to me. Like I said, she’s my kid,” Stephen confided to ABC.

Image via Facebook/Pasco County Animal Services

In addition to Dr. Glenn and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, PCAS credits a grant from Maddie’s Fund and a partnership with Human Animal Support Services with their ability to save Ollie’s life.

Now Stephen can sleep soundly once again with his beloved Ollie back by his side!

See their beautiful reunion in the video below.

Rosie, a one-year-old Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix, was brought to a Georgia shelter after her parents got divorced. The young mother couldn’t afford to move with both her children and the dogs. When surrendered, Rosie was healthy and trained, but being at a kill shelter during the holidays meant a chance she may not make it out alive.

Not long afterwards, Toni, a mother of two girls, was searching for dogs online. Her children got a peek of Rosie’s ad, which read: “Without an adoption commitment, she will die in the shelter.”

@rosie_and_family/ Instagram

Naturally, this broke young MacKenna and Kerrigan’s hearts. MacKenna told The Dodo:

“I was crying. I was like, ‘I don’t want this dog to die.'”

When Toni opened Rosie’s page again later, a big bar across her photo read “no longer available.” The kids worried that meant Rosie had been euthanized.

An Epic Surprise

Though it proved pretty difficult to keep this secret in, Toni and her husband Stephen had adopted Rosie without their kids’ knowledge. Soon, Rosie arrived on a transport plane, kindly flown by a volunteer pilot named Nate. Toni went to greet her and bring her back to her new family.

“She was very stressed, she lost her family and she doesn’t know where she belongs anymore.”

@rosie_and_family/Instagram

The giddy mom then captured the world’s sweetest meet-and-greet video. As Toni rounded the corner with Rosie on a leash, she could barely contain her excitement.

From a few feet down the path, the girls recognized the dog they thought had been put to sleep.

Their jaws dropped and their faces betrayed how completely surprised they were to see Rosie approaching. Already somewhat sure, the girls asked:

“Is it Rosie?” “Is she our new dog?”

@rosie_and_family/Instagram

They then figured out that’s the real reason Rosie’s page noted she was no longer available. Once they confirmed it, youngest MacKenna burst into tears and gave her mom a grateful hug. Then she went right back to hugging Rosie.

Stephen described this touching moment:

“When I saw MacKenna just break down and start crying, and just the look on their faces in shock, I definitely teared up.”

@rosie_and_family/Instagram

According to an Instagram caption, MacKenna “cried for 45 minutes” after first meeting Rosie.

@rosie_and_family/Instagram

A Perfect Addition To The Family

Obviously Rosie’s new human sisters were overjoyed to have her join their family. Rosie also lives with another dog named Ziggy and two cats now.

@rosie_and_family/Instagram

One family couldn’t keep her, but thankfully there was another more than happy to greet her with open arms and love her forever. As MacKenna describes:

“The best part about having Rosie is… everything.”

See how happy Rosie is with her new family by following their Instagram page.

The road to recovery has been a long one for Buddy the Labrador Retriever mix.

Buddy is getting a new lease on life after being intentionally set on fire by a 12-year-old boy while living on the streets as a stray. No one knows why the child decided to do this — but it resulted in terrible wounds and pain for the poor dog, who was found wandering the streets of Mississippi on April 22 with an extension cord wrapped around his neck and his face and front leg severely burned.

Image: Tunica Humane Society/ Facebook

Having third and fourth-degree burns on his face has been a huge struggle for the young dog. Vets at Mississippi State University’s veterinary college have been caring for Buddy since he was found, applying medicine to the wounds and bandaging his face daily to help him heal. He’s also had to undergo multiple skin graft surgeries.

Despite the cruelty that Buddy has faced, he is unbelievably sweet.

“He’s a loving, forgiving dog,” Sandy Williams, shelter director of the Tunica Humane Society, told the Clarion Ledger. “I don’t know how he’s come through this and kept his tender heart, but he has. He’s going to make somebody an exceptional dog.”

Image: Tunica Humane Society/ Facebook

Buddy has been reaching recovery milestones — including growing some whiskers and fur back on his face. His front leg that was originally badly burnt is now all healed up, and his mobility has greatly improved.

For his bravery and forgiving nature, Buddy has also achieved hero dog status. He will be inducted into the Animal Heroes Hall of Fame for 2021, which is an honor given to animals who have overcome adversity.

If there’s one thing that Buddy knows all too well, it’s overcoming difficult obstacles.

Image: Tunica Humane Society/ Facebook

“Animal Heroes Hall of Fame was created to honor brave and inspirational animals worldwide,” the website states. “Animals that have been through the horrors of living as strays, being abandoned, living in puppy mills, used for lab tests, used in fighting rings,  put in pounds and shelters, abused, dismembered, ill! They have overcome their difficulties and have gone on to be heroes either by performing acts of bravery, raising awareness on various issues or being inspirations to others, both human and animal, going through tough situations.”

To honor his bravery and strength, Buddy will be given a profile page on the Animal Heroes Hall of Fame website as well as a plaque in its virtual museum of animal heroes.

There is still plenty of goodness ahead for Buddy. The Tunica Humane Society has located a dog named Snoop who was Buddy’s companion on the streets. They hope to reunite the dogs soon and even possibly adopt them out together once Buddy is all healed.

Image: Tunica Humane Society/ Facebook

Vets expect Buddy to be able to leave the hospital sometime in August possibly. Then, the search for his forever home will begin. Hundreds of people have already shown interest in giving Buddy the life he deserves.

“Right now, we are accepting applications on Buddy and Snoop,” the Tunica Humane Society said in an update on Facebook. “But until we know what Buddy’s future medical needs might be, we won’t make a decision about where he will live out his life. People from all over the country are wanting to give this sweet dog a new start in life.  He will have many, many options and we won’t make that decision lightly.”

drowning rescue

A team of impressive rescue canines saved the life of a young girl caught in a strong ocean current. Even the best of swimmers can get whisked away in an instant, leaving them to fight for their lives to stay above water. Thankfully, the dogs of SICS Italian School of Rescue Dogs were on the scene this day.

A 15-year-old named Ilenia was enjoying a day at the beach with her friends when things took a sudden turn. Their quick dip in the ocean turned into an emergency situation, as a strong riptide suddenly overcame Ilenia.

The beach in Palinuro, Cilento is known for having unpredictable currents that can pull you out to sea, which is why there is always a team of lifeguards and rescue dogs on standby. Escaping a sudden riptide takes experience and knowledge on the behavior of the currents, both of which the SICS rescue team has plenty of.

Within seconds, Ilenia was pulled from her friends and inching her way towards the belly of the sea. Her arms were growing tired from paddling, making a water rescue her only shot at surviving. The moment her struggling was made obvious, Luna and Igor jumped into action. Incredibly, this impressive rescue mission was caught on camera.

The footage begins with Luna, the tan Labrador Retriever, catching up with Ilenia alongside her handler. The two were able to pull Ilenia onto their rescue buoy, allowing her to take a break from her frantic paddling. The black Labrador Retriever named Igor soon caught up with Luna and Ilenia, and led the way in the difficult maneuver back to shore.

With Igor in the lead, the group formed a chain that helped them push through the waves and make their way back to the shore. As everyone stumbled onto the beach, it was clear just how exhausted Ilenia was from the ordeal. She immediately plopped down next to her friends, likely in shock from what she had just been through.

This rescue may have been a unique experience for Ilenia, but this is an everyday occurrence for the team at SICS Italian School of Rescue Dogs. They train dogs in all forms of operational nautical rescue, making them fit to respond to water emergencies of all kinds.

When scrolling through the canine school’s Facebook page you will see hundreds of rescue missions, skilled training of soon to be rescue pups, and the faces of those who benefit from their work. This canine academy is creating heroes, many of which will go on to save so many lives.

We are so thankful Luna and Igor were on the scene to help save Ilenia, and have no doubt they will continue to help many others!

Two recalls have been issued for dog and cat food products from two different companies. These recalls have been issued for separate reasons.

First, Sunshine Mills, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of certain dog food products due to the potential for elevated levels of Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring by-product resulting from the growth of Aspergillus flavus, a corn mold which can be harmful to animals when consumed in significant quantities. Secondly, earlier in the month, 3 oz. cans of Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials Tuna Entrée in Sauce Wet Cat Food were recalled over fears they may contain pieces of plastic.

Country music star and two-time Grammy winner Miranda Lambert has announced sad news. Her precious dog, Jessi, has passed away at 13 ½ years old. She shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Today we had to say goodbye to our sweet Jessi.”

The loss comes just 9 months after the passing of Jessi’s littermate, Waylon. Lambert and her mother found Jessi and Waylon on an Oklahoma roadside in the middle of a sleet storm in 2008 when the pair was just six-weeks-old.

@mirandalambert/Instagram

Jessi and Waylon went on to become the inspiration behind the MuttNation Foundation, a rescue founded by Lambert and her mom in 2009 and dedicated to saving dogs in need. Though her dogs are gone now, they’ve left Lambert with a heart full of love and memories.

Family Found

Driving down an Oklahoma roadway in the icy fall, Lambert never expected to spot a pair of golden puppies. Of course, as a dog lover, she rescued the pair, a little boy and girl in need of a mom. She dubbed them Waylon and Jessi thanks to the album of choice playing at that moment.

“We were listening to the ‘I am Jessi Colter’ album. That’s how they got their names,” Lambert shared.

@mirandalambert/Instagram

Jessi Colter was wife to Waylon Jennings and, thanks to that album, both pups found their names while at the same time finding one of the best dog moms around. But no matter how amazing mom can be, dogs still have to go, and in her passing, Jessi and Waylon have been reunited in a place of no pain or suffering.

“We lost Waylon last October but we got to have Jessi just a little longer,” Lambert explained.  “But the truth is they belong together. They always have. I know she missed him terribly and we are so thankful to have had extra time.”

@mirandalambert/Instagram

Found together in life, Jessi and Waylon have found each other once more over the Rainbow Bridge. Read Lambert’s heartbreaking goodbye to Waylon and learn just what an amazing brother Jessi had in life. You can also learn how Lambert planted a tree in tribute to Waylon.

 Saying Good-Bye Hurts, But the Love is Worth the Pain

As Jessi left, Miranda shared, “We sent her off with the song ‘Storms Never Last’ from the same record she heard playing the first time I put her in my truck.”

Certainly, a fitting tribute to a dog who brought her heart so much joy.

@mirandalambert/Instagram
@mirandalambert/Instagram

After their rescue and throughout their lives, Jessi and Waylon have been cared for by the medical teams of Animalia Health & Wellness and VRSM in Franklin, Tennessee. Lambert thanked them for the “extra years we wouldn’t have had with Jessi and Way and I’m so grateful.”

Mom to Jessi for over 13 years and always a dog lover, Lambert said, “I can’t put into words what a dog’s love does to a heart. But if you have one you already know.”

@mirandalambert/Instagram

Lambert understands the magic of dogs as well as the pain of losing them, writing, “It’s so hard to let them go but the love is worth it.”

She couldn’t be more right. Still, in this moment of mourning, our hearts are sending out love and support to help Lambert through this time of heartbreak.

Introducing baby

A short video clip of a mother cat, seeming to introduce her puppy pal to her one-week-old kitten, has caught the attention of almost two million people. It’s definitely understandable why. Interspecies friendships are incredibly heartwarming to behold, and the clip is absolutely adorable.

When watching the actions of the cat, it’s almost as if she is asking and then showing the watchful dog how to be gentle with her baby.

Cat introducing baby
Image Credit: Screenshot / Youtube

The clip opens with the dog sniffing the kitten as the mother cat curls up against his face. It is obvious that they have already formed a strong bond. As the dog moves its nose closer to her kitten, the mother cat tenderly touches his face and then gives it a kiss. They even touch noses! This makes it appear like she is asking her canine companion to be gentle with her kitten.

Cat introducing baby
Image Credit: Screenshot / Youtube

Then, the dog lightly nudges the mama cat with its nose, suggesting that the dog is saying, “I understand.” The mother cat then reaches out to touch and kneed her kitten, as the dog continues to keep a close eye on the new baby. Quite a few comments on social media sites express surprise that the cat is so trusting of her puppy pal.

The person behind the camera had impeccable timing to capture such a sweet moment on video. But experts agree that introductions between dogs and cats are more likely to go smoothly when supervised and taken slowly.

“A slow and steady introduction will always win the race,” says Jackson Galaxy, a cat behaviorist known as the “Cat Daddy.”

The key to introducing your dog to a new cat is preparation. First impressions matter, and being properly prepared can help create a positive interaction. The first step after deciding that you’re ready to introduce your dog to a new cat is to make sure that your pup is properly trained. The commands “Down” and “Stay” are especially helpful during a first meeting. This way, you are better able to control the situation.

Provide the cat with a safe space that is high and out of reach of your dog. This way, the cat is able to observe their new domain from a place where they feel safe and comfortable. The photo below has the cat too accessible to the dog. Your cat’s safe space would need to be a bit higher. Also, create a “base camp” for your canine. They, too, need a place where they can escape and feel safe.

Cat with Dog

Allow both the cat and the dog to smell each other’s scents before they are in the same space. This helps both of them begin to familiarize themselves with each other before they are face to face.

Dogs and cats can be instant friends, or it can take a while for them to get to know each other. It is incredibly important to be patient and to proceed slowly. Do not try to “force” anything between them.

“America’s Top Dog” on the A & E network is the reality show dog lovers needed in their lives. The competition show features talented dogs and their handlers competing on an obstacle course designed to test their speed, agility, teamwork, and trust.

That last aspect, the bond between dog and trainer, proved pretty important in the success of one team: Team Chewy. The pup and his trainer/mom, Rachel Clark, won their first episode in Season 2, making it to the grand finale.

@TopDogAE/Facebook

The Quest To Become ‘Top Dog’

Clark, a manager at Cher Car Kennels in St. Johns, Michigan, found out about A&E’s dog competition reality show from her boss, owner Cheryl Carlson. She told FOX 47:

“Just reading the name, ‘America’s Top Dog,’ I was like, ‘Yeah, okay, Cheryl. You’re blowing a little smoke here. But I started looking up clips of the show and actually started watching season one and I was like, ‘You were not joking. We do all of this.'”

Rae Kat via Facebook

Cher Car Kennels boards, breeds, and trains dogs. Clark and her dog Chewy frequent physical challenges and competitions. An opportunity like this seemed too good to pass up since they really stand a good chance of winning. So, Clark began the interview process with the show.

“‘America’s Top Dog’ is like ‘American Ninja Warrior,’ but people do it with their dogs. There’s obstacles, there’s scent-detection, there’s dock-diving…jumping over hurdles, knocking down walls, pushing buttons and pulling levers in order to activate ramps…”

Screenshot, FOX 47

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, everything sort of hit a standstill, so, as they anxiously awaited news about their place on the show, they began to prepare anyway.

But, we started building obstacles. We started prepping and dissecting season one episodes like, ‘All right. We’re going to train like we’re going,’ and fortunately, that paid off for us because we just got extra time to prep.”

Rae Kat via Facebook

At last, they got a callback and had only a month before they would appear on the show. Carlson helped Clark and Chewy prepare for their big shot. They constructed courses and incorporated production sounds to ease Chewy into the show environment.

We trained in the evening. We had people running around with flashlights. We had boom-boxes. We had all the things that we could think of that might cause them to have some problems so that we knew we’d be super prepared when we got out to actually be on set.”

All the work paid off when the pair won their first competition on July 28th.

A Special Bond Makes A Strong Competitor

Dogs can learn some incredible tricks, but a special bond between them and their trainer makes all the difference in competitions like this. Clark now has a career working with dogs, but Chewy was the one who inspired her to take that step.

“He’s my foundation dog. I had an amazing opportunity stumbling upon a job listing for this kennel…but, I wouldn’t have been able to take full advantage of it if I didn’t have a dog, and he’s my first dog.”

Rae Kat via Facebook

Clark rescued Chewy when he was just a puppy in 2017 and began training him right away. They’re now completely inseparable. As Clark put it:

“If my dog’s not invited, odds are I’m not coming.”

You’ll have to catch the finale on A&E to find out whether this special relationship and Chewy’s skills on the course paid off for the team!

There’s nothing cuter than dogs and babies.

So when you combine the two, it makes for extra amounts of adorable.

That’s just what has won over the hearts of thousands of people on Instagram with the dynamic duo of Macy the baby girl and Marshall the Golden Retriever.

marshall_thegoldenr/ Instagram

Best friends since Macy’s birth, the Australian buds have been taking the internet by storm with over 20,000 followers on Instagram. Their parents, the Bryants, post their day-to-day antics — and there is plenty of cuddling and playing involved.

The two share a special bond that many canines do with their human siblings. The pair is often shown playing in the garden, having tea parties, and simply relaxing together.

marshall_thegoldenr/ Instagram

Marshall has loved Macy since she was born. In their first photo together, he is shown gently nuzzling the newborn with his nose. He would often guard her while she was sleeping, never straying too far from his new little friend.

“Bit of a throwback to Marshall’s first morning with Macy,” the Bryants said in a sweet post of the two. “The most gentle floof, he just watched her and he knew he couldn’t get too close but sure enough he pushed it and got as close as he could. The way he looks at her though.”

marshall_thegoldenr/ Instagram

Now that Macy is a toddler, their bond has grown even stronger. She is able to run around with him and play, and he really seems to enjoy her company. In most of the pictures of the two together, Marshall has a classic canine grin on his face.

Marshall goes everywhere with Macy, including the park, beach, and even the bathtub. One adorable photo shows Macy in the tub and Marshall standing next to it and licking up some of the bathwater.

marshall_thegoldenr/ Instagram

“Bath time is always a family event,” the Bryants joked about the photo

The sweet duo has garnered thousands of fans online, and people are always commenting on how cute the two look together.

“He’s known from day one that Macy is his favorite little human and he will always be by her side caring for her!” one fan wrote. “Animals are our best friends,” another fan continued. “To grow up with animals is one of the best things which can happen to a child.”

marshall_thegoldenr/ Instagram

For Macy and Marshall, that sentiment couldn’t be any more true. One look is all it takes to know just how special they are to one another.
