Grieving Firefighter Rescues Pup One Day After Losing Her Own Dog

The day after saying goodbye to one of her own beloved dogs, Captain Kelly Jernigan of the Winston-Salem Fire Department experienced a moment of healing when she saved a pooch in peril.

Jernigan and her team responded to a fire at an apartment complex and heard frantic barking coming from one of the units. A dog named Cinnamon was trapped inside.

Camera crews from Fox 8 captured the moment Jernigan emerged from the blaze with the little terrier in her arms.

“It’s kind of good timing for me,” Jernigan said. “It kind of helps me heal.”

Three years ago, Jernigan adopted a pair of rescued Dobermans. One of them, named Zion, crossed the Rainbow Bridge earlier this week after a battle with cancer. He was estimated to be about 11-years-old.

Being there for Cinnamon in her time of need has helped Jernigan take the first step towards healing her heart.

“Once I got my hands on this one, it’s like all is right with the world,” she told Fox 8.
