Morgan McKenzie was taking a normal stroll around her Delaware property when she heard distressed meows coming from the distance. She soon realized that these screams were coming from a hollowed-out log nearby, and couldn’t believe the tiny eyes she found staring back at her when we went to investigate.
The cries were coming from a small gray and white kitten that couldn’t have been more than a few days old. Morgan considered taking the kitten at that moment but chose to leave her there for a short time just in case her mom was nearby. As a few hours passed and night began to fall, she knew had to intervene.
“When it started to get dark, we went back to make sure she was gone, but we could still hear her little cries. I was so glad we picked her up because I don’t think she would have made it. She was only a day or two old. She couldn’t see, her ears were still folded and she was starving.” – Morgan McKenzie
Once Morgan brought the tiny kitten that she soon named Polly inside, she realized that she was covered in fleas. Being so small and fragile, Morgan knew she had to rid her of these crawling critters immediately. It was during this bath that her 12-year-old Lab, Paxton, came to the scene to check out what was going on.
Though Morgan was a bit wary of the initial interaction, it was clear from the start that Paxton and Polly would go on to have a beautiful friendship.
“Paxton got to meet Polly right after her bath. He fell in love with her at first because he got to clean her after every bottle feed and she loved it because she didn’t know any different.” – Morgan McKenzie
Because Polly was so young, she likely thought the parental love that Paxton offered was completely normal. Polly’s eyes still being closed, she had no idea how large her new friend truly was. Though the two were cut from a different cloth, it didn’t seem to matter to Paxton. Polly needed help, and Paxton had a lot of love to give!
As time went on, the beautiful bond that these two shared only seemed to grow. They were each other’s entire world, and Polly continued to look up to her surrogate dog mom.
“I don’t think she ever knew any better so Polly thinks this is all just normal. She grooms him, he grooms her. I don’t think she knows she is a cat.” – Morgan McKenzie
Polly is now a rambunctious 6-month-old kitten, and Paxton continues to have an abundance of patience for his favorite feline friend. We are so touched by this adorable duo, and can’t wait to watch Polly grow up with sweet Paxton by her side.
