Sadly, the Rainbow Bridge has gained yet another addition: Days of Our Lives star Bryan Dattilo’s pooch, Shamus.
Dattilo had Shamus for 13 years and is heartbroken at the loss. He posted a photo of the dog on his Instagram page to share the news with his fans.
“Shamus Ace Dattilo,” Dattilo said on Instagram. “13 years of love and devotion. RIP.”
The beloved German Shorthaired Pointer will truly be missed. Fans flooded Dattilo’s post with words of condolence and well wishes.
“Aww, no,” one fan commented. “That’s so sad. I’m so sorry.” Another fan continued, “Bless your sweet baby.”
Last July, Dattilo shared a video of Shamus and the family’s other dog, an English Springer Spaniel, cooling down in the pool. The dogs were having a blast. Sweet memories like this one are sure to stay with Dattilo for a lifetime.
The past few months have not been an easy time for the family. Recently, Dattilo’s wife, Elizabeth, finished treatment for breast cancer. She was shown on Instagram ringing the bell at the hospital that signifies the end of treatment for cancer.
“Go ahead honey, ring that bell,” Dattilo said on an Instagram video of his wife. “You deserve it! You finished your breast cancer treatment! So proud!”
The couple also just celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary.
“Still in love,” Dattilo gushed on Instagram. “Together, we found the way.”
The couple has been through so much together, and now they’re dealing with the loss of their fur baby. Our dogs are family — and surely, there will be a hole where Shamus used to be for a long time to come.
Luckily, they still have their other pooch to cuddle and spend time with during this hard time.
“So very sorry for the loss of your precious pup,” a fan commented online. “So sorry Bryan,” another said. “My thoughts are with you and your family.”
While the loss is surely going to be painful for a long time, Dattilo is thankful for the 13 years he got to spend with Shamus. That’s a lot longer than many pet parents get with their fur babies — especially large breed dogs.
Shamus is now resting peacefully at the Rainbow Bridge, where we can only hope he will reunite with his dad one day. Until then, his memory will surely be with the family every day.
