RECALL: Social Media Post Leads To Dog Treat Company’s Recall

Pet parents have become very divided after a voluntary recall from the Lazy Dog Cookie Co. The company is known for its special treats, including ice cream and birthday cakes. Many people adore the company because they’re a family-owned business that donates to animal organizations, but a recent social media post made some customers question the safety of the treats.

The controversy occurred when a customer’s dog got severely sick after eating one of the company’s cakes. After further investigation, the company decided to recall the lot to prevent more dogs from getting sick.

What Products Were Recalled?

The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. recalled a specific lot of their Pup-PIEs products, which are sold at many popular pet stores like PetSmart. The recalled products have the following lot code and sell-by date: 022297 Sell By 102024. No other products were affected by this recall.

“The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. is focused on ensuring the health and safety of all our four-legged friends – something that has been a priority since we started this company over 21 years ago. Since we became aware of this situation on Sunday, April 30th, 2023, we have been working around the clock with our team to develop the best course of action. It is out of an abundance of caution; The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. has decided to voluntarily remove the entire lot of Pup-PIEs at issue from the market,” The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. wrote on Facebook.

What Led to the Recall?

The customer first made a post complaining about the product on April 27th, 2023. According to her, both her dogs got severely sick after eating a Pup-PIE. One of the dogs had to stay at the vet overnight to recover.

Upon further investigation, the customer realized that the ingredients listed on the packaging weren’t the same as the ingredients listed online, which can be dangerous for dogs with allergies and sensitivities. She claims the company told her that her dogs getting sick was just an isolated incident. Yet, she has since discovered many other reports of dogs getting ill from the treats, which she added as images in her post.

“They are trying to convince me that my situation is an isolated incident, but I’ve seen dozens of reviews, and gotten countless messages from people who have experienced the same thing. Another girl’s dog is actively dying tonight after she said her dog ingested the same product, and it is bothering me so much to see this company deny that their product could be the cause when it is the one common denominator in every situation. At the very least it needs to be investigated! I don’t want anyone else to go through this!” the customer wrote.
