Kristen Bell Says Sad Goodbye To Her Senior Dog, Barbara.

Adopting a senior fur baby is such a rewarding and love-filled experience. We know our time together might be cut short, but we also learn that the love we share will bond us quickly together. Kristen Bell, The Good Place alum, her husband, Dax Shepard, and daughters Lincoln, 7, and Delta, 5, experienced such love with their one-eyed senior rescue, Barbara. They adopted sweet Barbara two years ago from the Dog Café in their hometown of Los Angeles.

Barbara Became Part Of The Family

The Frozen star has been an advocate for rescuing senior dogs for several years and is continually urging the public to rescue. “I have treated all my dogs like my kids,” she told PEOPLE Magazine, “To me, they’re just like kids I didn’t birth.” The loving connection that Kristen’s family shares with Barbara is undeniable and their choice to rescue vs. purchase is admirable. “I chose to adopt as opposed to going to a breeder because I wanted a family member, not a handbag,” Bell shares. “It should be less about the purchase and more about connecting with someone who also needs some companionship.”

Connect they did, which makes the sad news that she posted on her Instagram story on October 9^th even more devastating. “Our beautiful @barbarabiscuits got sick this weekend,” Bell captioned the pic. “Vet diagnosed Giardia, and it looked like for a while like Barb was gonna pull through. Even though Barb is a (gorgeous) fighter, she’s gone septic and her lil body doesn’t look like it’s gonna pull through.”

Sweet Barbara passed away after an intestinal infection took over and she became septic. Bell posted a heart-breaking selfie with Barbara on their final day together.

Saying Good-bye Is Never Easy

“On our way now to say goodbye,” she later wrote on her Instagram story. “Trying to stay super grateful for the 2 years we got to spoil her like the Queen that she is,” said Kristen. “I’m going to miss her a ton, but I’m also really, really grateful that I got to spoil her in her last two years.”

Kristen thanked the Dog Café in Los Angeles for “bringing her into our lives.” The family has another fur baby, Frank, who is also a rescue from that same L.A. organization. The Dog Café’s mission is to revolutionize dog adoption by connecting dogs and humans in a comfortable café environment. It is a unique spot that allows you to play with adorable rescue pups as you grab your coffee fix and catch up with friends.

Adopting Senior Dogs Can Bring So Much Joy

Kristen calls us to action and urges us to adopt senior dogs into our families. “I had and I continue to have such a good experience with adopting senior dogs, and I hope by seeing some of Barbara’s antics, it inspires other people to open their hearts to older dogs,” Kristen says. “I know they’re not like the ideal thing to take on and obviously it’s sad when they die, but it’s no comparison to the feeling you have knowing that you spoiled someone in their twilight years.”
