Dangers of Salmonella

Salmonella-contaminated dog food can affect the animals eating it and the humans handling it. Humans are at a higher risk if they don’t wash their hands after touching pet food.

Dogs infected with Salmonella may experience diarrhea, vomiting, fever, lethargy, abdominal pain, or a decreased appetite. If your dog is experiencing unusual symptoms after eating the recalled products, contact your vet to be safe. Some infected dogs won’t show any symptoms, but they can still pass the bacteria to humans.

Humans that have interacted with the contaminated food may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or abdominal cramping. In extreme cases, it could lead to more serious conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, eye irritation, muscle pain, and urinary tract infections. If you experience any symptoms after touching the food, you should talk to a medical professional.

Luckily, Salmonella symptoms usually only last for a few days, but during that time, the infected person or pet is highly contagious. It’s safest to stay home if you think you’ve been infected.
