Great Pyrenees Puppy Trapped In Cactus Begs Human To Save Him

Dog trapped in cactus

Tumbleweed, the Great Pyrenees puppy, started his life wandering around an Arizona desert, making his name very fitting. No one knows what his life was like before he was rescued, but living alone in the desert is no place for a fluffy, defenseless puppy.

To make matters worse, Tumbleweed found himself fighting against a cactus, which clung to his thick coat. The poor puppy couldn’t escape on his own, and struggling only made more spines and burrs stick to his fur. Luckily, a miracle occurred before it was too late.

Puppy Removed from Cactus

Nina, an emergency animal medical technician at Arizona Humane Society (AHS), was the one who spotted the 5-month-old puppy trapped in a cactus. She carefully removed him from the dangerous plant, but that didn’t make the pain go away. His coat was a magnet for burrs, so the poor pup was still uncomfortable after being freed.

Thus, Nina rushed Tumbleweed to AHS’ trauma hospital to assess his condition. Veterinarians tried to remove the burrs from his coat, but many of them were entangled too deep. The best option for the puppy would be to shave off his coat and let it regrow.

“The 5-month-old puppy had gotten himself stuck in a cactus and was covered in sharp spines and cactus burrs. Nina brought him back to AHS’ trauma hospital where it was discovered that his long fur was so entangled with the cactus burrs, he needed to be shaved to remove them all,” AHS wrote on Facebook.

A Life-Saving Haircut

Veterinarians had to shave Tumbleweed’s fur down as close to the skin as they could since it was also severely matted. While this process is unpleasant for most dogs, Tumbleweed was brave and cooperative every step of the way. AHS posted a video of his haircut, and he sits perfectly still the whole time.

“Throughout the entire ordeal, Tumbleweed’s gentle disposition never faltered. The sweet pup patiently waited as the veterinary team slowly removed painful spines from his entire body,” AHS wrote.

Even though Tumbleweed looks a little silly with his new haircut, the adorable pup seems much more lively afterward. Once his vet checkup was complete, AHS put him up for adoption. He’s no longer listed on their website, so he must have already found his forever home. What a lucky pup!

However, Tumbleweed is just one of many dogs rescued in Arizona. If you’re looking to adopt a new furry friend, check out the adoptable animals at AHS.
