Dog Dad Treks Up Mountain To Give His Dying Best Friend An Amazing Last Hike

Every dog has his day — and for Monty the Labradoodle, this day was surely a magnificent one.

After an 18 month battle with Leukemia, Monty was very close to crossing the rainbow bridge when his dad, Carlos Fresco, decided to take him on one last journey up a mountain that the two had explored many times before.

Carlos and Monty traveled up to the peak of Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, Wales, complete with the pooch riding in a wheelbarrow. Strangers saw the pair making it up the mountain and even decided to help push Monty.

“He loved hill walks and we improvised and took him on trips around the wonderful beacons,” Fresco told Metro. “Although he was weak, he enjoyed all the fuss and attention received by so many well-wishers. People on the hills were so kind and equally so sad at his deteriorating condition. In fact, total strangers asked if they could share in pushing Monty on his last journey – many total strangers shed a tear as we all love dearly our little four-legged friends.”

Monty was 10 years old when he eventually passed away from Leukemia on June 21. While the dog lived a full life exploring so many great hikes with his dad, his last hike is making quite the buzz online.

Dogs are our family, too, and so many people from around the world have reached out to Fresco to share their well wishes and condolences.

Once the pair finally reached the peak of the mountain, Monty was quite tired. But there he lay in the wheelbarrow, wrapped in a blanket, with nothing but a complete look of love in his eyes.

It was clear that sweet Monty was so thankful to his dad for giving him one final journey up the mountain — so much that everyone who passed them stopped to give him pets and love.

After the trek, Monty managed to hang on until Father’s Day to spend one last special day with his dad. He passed away at the foot of Fresco’s bed just a few days later.

“That little guy touched so many lives,” Fresco said. “Made everyone he came into contact with smile and just take a moment to reflect how sometimes life’s not that bad. Our little companions are never judgemental, are always there waiting for you and offer comfort when things haven’t gone well.”
