A flock of parrots has found themselves bounced from public display at a zoo in Friskney, England, as the five culprits had a bad habit of using foul language. And the birds have no remorse about their mouths as they immensely enjoy swearing and then laughing about it!
Billy, Eric, Jade, Elsie, and Tyson are all African grey parrots, a species of bird known for its impressive mimicking abilities and extensive vocabularies. An intelligent bird, African greys have the ability to learn a thousand words or more and can quickly learn a new word every three days. So imagine the trouble this party of five and their colorful language brought to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Centre when they joined their colony of two hundred grey parrots.
Bad Words for the Birds
When the birds first arrived at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Centre, staff thought Eric, Billy, Tyson, Elsie, and Jade were comical. But the hope was that when the birds were introduced to a colony, they’d “kick the habit.” Bad behavior is always so much fun, though, so instead of the naughty words fading away, every time someone laughed or reacted to their swearing, the birds were pleased, and the potty mouths stuck.

“We are quite used to parrots swearing, but we’ve never had five at the same time,” said the park’s chief executive, Steve Nichols. “Most parrots clam up outside, but for some reason these five relish it.”
“With the five, one would swear and another would laugh and that would carry on,” Steve explained.
“When a parrot tells tells you to ‘f-— off’ it amuses people very highly.”
But while the thought of five parrots cussing away tickles some, others, like parents with small children, might not have appreciated the birds giving their kids any new vocabulary words. The park staff decided it might be better to separate the band of bad word birds so they wouldn’t “set each other off” anymore.
“I’m hoping they learn different words within colonies,” Steve said. “But if they teach the others bad language and I end up with 250 swearing birds, I don’t know what we’ll do.”
