It certainly isn’t easy for an animal to live on the streets. Never mind doing so while pregnant. The timing of this mama’s rescue couldn’t have been better because she was days away from giving birth. Luckily, she was able to have her babies in the safety of a shelter.
Then something unexpected happened. Many mamas are incredibly protective of their puppies, but this former street dog welcomed rescuers to spend time with her babies. She even wanted them to hold her paw while she nursed her newborn babies.
When mama Kerry was found, she was extremely pregnant and hiding under a car. (And by extremely pregnant, we mean she was mere days away from giving birth.) Luckily, she was spotted in the nick of time and gave birth to her five beautiful babies in the safety of a shelter.
Hearts & Bones Rescue group in Texas was thrilled to help this amazing mama welcome five precious puppies into the world.
“Kerry and her babies settled right in. Kerry is incredibly resilient and seemed happy to have a safe place to care for her pups,” says Katherine Hieber of Hearts & Bones Rescue.
Kerry’s puppies: Cork, Clare, Carlow, Tipperary, and Roscommon, were all born healthy and adorable. And after living life on the street, Kerry was thrilled to be supported and surrounded by so much love. While many new dog moms are wary of allowing humans near their puppies, Kerry welcomed the attention.
She was so happy to finally feel safe and receive so much affection that she even asked for her paw to be held while she nursed. Can you believe it? Not many dogs like to have their paws touched at all, let alone held while caring for newborn puppies!
“She is extremely affectionate, so if you’re around, she’ll make it known how much she loves being close to you with kisses or a paw shake. Kerry is very trusting and hasn’t been overly protective. She lets us handle her puppies so that we can weigh them and make sure everyone is growing up healthy,” says Katherine.
It’s quite clear that mama Kerry is somewhere that she feels safe and that she is surrounded by people she can trust. She is beyond blessed to have been found by such caring rescuers when she needed them most.
