Veteran Embarks On Cross-Country Road Trip To Save Dog

Dr. Indiana Bones – Bones for short – is veteran David Broido’s service dog and best friend. Broido, who served in the 82nd Airborne Division, suffers from PTSD. Bones reminds Broido to take his medication, wakes him from “less than pleasant dreams,” and performs other important tasks. Unfortunately, Bones’ name became ironic when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – bone cancer.

Broido couldn’t afford the life-saving amputation Bones needed in California where he lives, so his friends started a GoFundMe page to raise money for a road trip to Philadelphia where the surgery could be performed at a much more affordable cost. Fearing it would be their last trip together, Broido took 4 days to drive with Bones from California to Pennsylvania, hitting the mountains and the desert along the way.

“In case the worst news was delivered when I got here, I wanted to make sure that we got some really cool adventures so we stopped some places. We saw some people. We had a great time.”

The surgery was performed on Tuesday, and Bones is recovering well. The most recent update on the GoFundMe page as of this writing was:

“Bones is up… Eating, playing, and ambulatory waiting for his human.”

With a lot of generosity from donors and a little bit of luck, hopefully Bones will remain by Broido’s side for many years to come.
