Jackson, a Golden Retriever with a sharp intellect, found a new lease on life when Steve Moore rescued him from a shelter. Despite differing opinions on animal intelligence, Jackson’s smarts quickly became apparent. Moore, deeply committed to Jackson’s development, embarked on a rigorous daily training regimen.
In just a month, Moore’s dedication bore fruit, transforming Jackson’s abilities in a way that captured the attention of previously indifferent onlookers. They were now taken by Jackson’s newfound skill and expressed their desire to adopt him. Moore chose bustling, noisy spots for training sessions to acclimatize Jackson to active environments. He taught Jackson to master the art of sitting and staying put, progressively extending the length of time. The pinnacle of their training involved Jackson maintaining his sit-and-stay command while Moore distanced himself, showcasing the remarkable progress they had achieved together.

He repeatedly practiced leaving Jackson alone in a safe and secure place while he went into stores to complete his errands. This was a better option than leaving Jackson in a car, where he could overheat since dogs are typically not allowed in most stores. Leaving Jackson untethered provided him the freedom to run to safety in case of an emergency situation.

In the last step, I trained Jackson to sit and stay while wearing a sign around his neck that says “Dad told me to wait here. Me waiting.” Despite the commotion around him and people approaching him to say hello and pet him, Jackson waits patiently for his human to come back.
