Why in the world does NomNomNow want dog poop?
Believe it or not, the tiny microbes within your dog’s sample help reveal vital information about canine health and nutrition.
The term “microbiome” refers to the combined genes of all the microorganisms within a specific habitat. The microbiome of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes within the gut help our dogs stave off illness and maintain a healthy weight.
However, alongside the healthy microorganisms, the canine digestive system also hosts potentially harmful bacteria. Some leave them susceptible to disease while others affect their ability to digest certain foods.
Recently, iHeartDogs co-founder Marshall Morris sat down with NomNomNow scientist, Dr. Ryan Honaker to discuss gut bacteria, dog poop, canine nutrition, and the microbiome study. (INSERT VIDEO BELOW)
What Does Poor Gut Health Look Like?
Dr. Honaker explains that a dog’s gut microbiome can affect them in unexpected ways. We all know that vomiting and diarrhea are signs of digestive problems. But allergies, behavioral issues, obesity, and many other common ailments may also have a connection to the delicate balance of gut bacteria.
“It seems like every week there’s a new correlation that’s being discovered,” Dr Honaker says. “Now the focus is, what can we do about this? How can we intervene? How can we develop treatments or diagnostic approaches to really take advantage of this role the microbiome has in improving and maintaining health?”
In order to provide answers to these questions, Dr. Honaker and his team need poop. Lots and lots of poop.
That’s where you and your dog come in!
