Many dog people prefer smaller breeds due to their longer-on-average lifespans and their adaptability to small living spaces. The Kennel Club released a list of the region’s most popular dogs, and several small dogs topped the list.
Is your little dog one of the most popular in the UK? Check out the list of the 10 most popular small dog breeds below.
10 Small Dog Breeds Popular In The UK
According to the Kennel Club’s registration data, these 10 smaller dogs are the most popular breeds in the UK:
- French Bulldog: The data indicates 39,266 Frenchies were registered with the Kennel Club in 2020.
- Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund: One of two types of popular Dachshunds, the Miniature Smooth Haired clocked 10,369 registrations in 2020.
- Pug: These little squish-faced dogs are extremely popular in the UK, with 6,033 registrations in 2020.
- Miniature Schnauzer: These dogs did originate in Germany, after all.
- Border Terrier: These popular pups are actually named after the area the breed originates from: on the border between England and Scotland.
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Another classic UK dog, the Cavalier is beloved in the continent.
- Pomeranian: UK residents love these little poof balls, with 1,757 registrations in 2020.
- Smooth Coat Chihuahua: These pocket-sized pups joined tons of homes last year.
- Mini Long Haired Dachshund: These Dachshunds also made the list, though less common than their smooth-haired cousins.
- West Highland White Terrier: The Westie rounds out the list having gained popularity during the pandemic.
Since this is a list of smaller dogs, the most popular larger dogs don’t appear. You might be interested and unsurprised to know that Labrador Retrievers are still top dogs, with a 13% increase in popularity since the pandemic started.
Of course, these stats are limited to the UK, and they’re based on registration numbers, so it’s possible there’s some wiggle room. At least, that’s the excuse you can use if your dog’s breed doesn’t appear here.
Adopting Purebred Dogs
Many assume that you can’t find purebred dogs without going through a breeder, but that’s simply not true. At iHeartDogs, we always recommend adopting and not shopping. Check out this guide to finding any breed of dog in a rescue.
If you do choose to find a dog through a breeder, always make sure you vet them and verify their pedigrees. Buying a dog off of a public website like Craigslist may result in a scam, so it’s important to do your research.
Plus, mixed breed dogs tend to have some of the best traits of their different breeds!
