Elevated vitamin D levels are among the most common causes of pet food recalls. Earlier this month, another popular dog food brand was voluntarily recalled for this reason. Now, Tuffy’s Pet Foods has also recalled some of their NutriSource dog food due to dangerous levels of vitamin D.
Of course, vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs because it promotes healthy bones. Yet, in high doses, any ingredient can become dangerous. So, if you have any of the affected products, it’s best to stop serving them to keep your furry friend safe.
Which Products were Recalled?
Tuffy’s Pet Foods recalled about 1,600 cases of the NutriSource PureVita Salmon Entree Dog Food, which come in Tetra Pak cartons with light pink designs. The food is 12.5 ounces per carton, and it has a UPC of #073893962021.
The recalled products only had the following lot codes and expiration dates:
- Lot #0629101N1 and best by June 29th, 2023
- Lot #0901101N1 and best by September 1st, 2023
This recall went into effect after the manufacturer notified Tuffy’s of the issue. The company has since identified the problem and taken corrective action to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. No other NutriSource food or treats have been affected by this recall.
Dangers of Elevated Vitamin D for Dogs
While there are no reported illnesses related to this recall, it’s still important to be cautious. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, making high amounts riskier for dogs than water-soluble vitamins.
Dogs of all sizes could experience symptoms like vomiting, increased urination, increased thirst, loss of appetite, excessive drooling, and weight loss. In extreme cases, it could lead to kidney failure and other severe health issues.
So, if you notice any unusual symptoms in your dog after they ate the recalled product, contact your vet immediately.
What to Do if You Have the Affected Products
If you purchased a product affected by the recall, stop serving it to your dog right away. You can return it to your place of purchase for a full refund. If the product doesn’t have the listed UPC, lot numbers, or dates, then it’s safe for consumption. These products were distributed nationwide to distributors and retail stores.
Customers with additional questions about the recall can contact Tuffy’s Pet Foods at (800) 525-9155 on Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Central Time. You can also email them at tufcustservice@klnfamilybrands.com.
