Dog Follows His Mini-Humans To School & Ends Up In Detention

When Karen Manthey’s kids first laid eyes on their new Goldendoodle puppy they immediately decided his name would be Sandy. Lainey and Jasper had recently watched the classic musical, Annie and thought their pup looked just like the street dog rescued by the title character.

But this Sandy is no “Dumb Dog.” In fact, he’s incredibly bright, which often leads him into mischief. Sandy’s most recent caper not only landed him in hot water with the local elementary school, but it also resulted in a hilarious photo that is quickly going viral.

Look at that sweet, innocent face!

It all started when 10-year-old Lainey and 5-year-old Jasper headed back to school after a seven-month break. Quarantining has been stressful for us, but for dogs like Sandy, it has been heaven!

You see, the sweet 6-year-old pooch had grown accustomed to having his favorite mini humans at home full-time and he just wasn’t ready to let them go. So on October 16 when the kids headed off to school, Sandy decided to follow them.

Sandy was a surprise Christmas pup for the Manthey kids!

Most days his escape would not have been possible, but on this particular morning, Lainey and Jasper exited through the garage door. Doing his best Indiana Jones impression, Sandy slipped out before it fully closed.

Perhaps he ducked behind fences and trees, or maybe the kids were just too distracted to notice, but somehow Sandy managed to tail Lainey and Jasper all the way to school.

Once there, Sandy was discovered by the excited children waiting for the morning bell. His presence was reported to the office staff who took him inside to ensure his safety.

As you can see from the now-infamous photo, Sandy was not the slightest bit sorry for his actions! After happily visiting with the office ladies, he leapt into the window to gaze out onto the busy school hallway.

The blinds were closed, but Sandy didn’t let that slow him down. He was tangled in their remains when one of the Mantheys’ neighbors snapped this picture.

“He was thrilled with the day’s adventures,” Karen Manthey said regarding Sandy’s lack of shame. “If anything, I think he’ll try twice as hard to sneak off with the kids again.”

Manthey offered to pay for the destroyed window blinds, but the school staff was happy to write it off in exchange for a digital copy of the photo. She also shared it to a “pet shaming” page on Facebook where it has since received thousands of comments and laugh reacts.

When Sandy isn’t serving detention he enjoys chasing birds and stealing food (he once carried off and ate an entire rotisserie chicken.)

But above all, Sandy loves his family. He is completely devoted to them, spending his days with the kids and their friends and his nights bed-hopping so that no one feels left out.

On camping trips if the family is separated he’ll spend all his time running back and forth to check on each group to make sure everyone is safe,” Manthey said.

Sandy with the whole fam.

Sandy just wants to make his humans happy, and now that he is famous, he can bring joy to the rest of the world, too!
