Hockey Team’s New Service Dog In Training Will Melt Your Heart!

Washington Capitals New Puppy

In 2019, the Washington Capitals added a furry team member: a puppy named Captain! Captain stayed with the team as he trained to become a service dog for a veteran. Saying goodbye to Captain was bittersweet, but the team was so happy to be a part of his journey. So, they decided to go on a similar adventure all over again.

The hockey team recently introduced fans to 9-week-old Biscuit, who is a Chocolate Labrador puppy. Biscuit will hang out with the team as he trains to be a service dog too, and the team is already sharing the most heartwarming images of the pup.

Welcome to the Team!

The Washington Capitals are working with America’s VetDogs to prepare Biscuit for life as a service dog. The organization trains dogs and gives them to veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders free of charge.

“America’s VetDogs has an incredible impact in the military and first-responder community, and we look forward to being a part of Biscuit’s formal training over the next season as he begins to learn how to best serve his future partner,” said Amanda Tischler, the Capitals’ vice president of marketing.

Biscuit will be with the team for over a year, which will give him lots of socialization as he trains. He will get to hang out at the office and attend home games, practices, and other events. After this part of the program is finished, he will complete training at the America’s VetDogs campus in New York before being paired with a veteran.

Biscuit Becomes a Star

Despite being a new team member, Biscuit has already gained a lot of fans. He has gotten to play on the ice, wear adorable outfits, and shower the players with kisses. He’s living the dream!

“We are thrilled to partner again with the Washington Capitals on co-raising ‘Biscuit’ to become a service dog for a veteran or first responder with disabilities,” said John Miller, the president and CEO of America’s VetDogs. “The ownership, team, staff, and fans have all embraced America’s VetDogs’ mission, and partnerships like these are vital to the growth and socialization of a future service dog. We saw a wonderful outcome with Captain being placed with his veteran and look forward to seeing Biscuit do the same.”
