Anyone who’s a fan of dancer/actress Julianne Hough or just high-profile dogs in general has surely heard of her two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Lexi and Harley. These pretty ladies have been on TV, in magazines, and all over Instagram. Plus, they are beyond cute.
Hough once gushed to Us Weekly about her beloved fur daughters.
“My girls have very strong, distinct personalities. Lexi’s the active, social one while Harley likes to chill. We always say Lexi is human because she can sense emotions — if you’re upset, she will snuggle and comfort you.”
Clearly Hough’s dogs were a huge part of her very busy life. In fact, she was just 21 years old when she first adopted Lexi.
On Saturday, October 12th, Hough and her husband hockey player Brooks Laich suddenly revealed through Instagram posts that their two beloved pups had passed.
“Thank you for being my babies, my daughters. Thank you for choosing me. Thank you for teaching me how to be your mother.”
Lexi and Harley both died September 28th. Lexi, the Blenheim, was 11-years-old and Harley, the Tri-Color, was 8.
The couple declined to provide a cause of death for either dog.
As someone who wasn’t even their momma but got to know and love them through Instagram, this is heartbreaking! These two sweeties have been the real stars of Hough’s Instagram for a long time.
I remember getting choked up at the photos of a snuggly Lexi comforting her mama after she went through surgery.
Hough certainly never held back when it came to posting about her dogs. Surely all of us dog parents on Instagram can relate.
Hough would also regularly bring her two Cavies to work with her. They even guest-starred in an episode of ‘America’s Got Talent’ when an animal psychic read their thoughts! (Harley didn’t have much patience for that, and neither did the judges.)
Laich, who officially married into the family in 2017, shared how devastating the dogs’ passing is to the couple.
“Lexi and Harley were not just pets to us, they were our children, and we loved them as such.”
Losing loved ones is never easy, no matter how many times your candids have appeared in People.
Hough and Laich, though heartbroken, appear to be extremely grateful for the time they did get with their little gals.
“And thank you Lexi and Harley, for teaching me grace, softening my heart, and showing me love. You are perfect, and may you Rest In Peace.”
Though this is a tragic event, Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich are shedding light on how significant the loss of a dog can be and that mourning, however publicly, is okay.
