You don’t have to know much about salmonella to realize it’s not something you want in your dog’s food. Many popular dog food brands have been pulled off the shelves temporarily due to a potential salmonella contamination. It often makes dog parents worry and question the quality of their dog’s food, which is why it’s crucial to stay on top of dog food recalls.
The Real Pet Food Company has recently issued a new recall as of September 22nd, 2020. It was a voluntary recall on select products with potential salmonella bacteria contamination.
Which Products Have Been Recalled?
The voluntary recall was issued for 4-pound bags of the Billy + Margot Wild Kangaroo and Superfoods Recipe. Also, the lot code for these products is V 07 Feb 2022.
This recall doesn’t affect any Billy + Margot products sold outside of the United States, and other products within the United States are not affected either.
Routine sampling determined that these products contained some bacteria. Therefore, the company ended production and distribution for that specific product. Later, the FDA will further investigate what caused this issue.
How Can Salmonella Affect You and Your Dog?
Dog food with a salmonella risk can be dangerous for both humans and dogs. Even if you only handled the product, you could still be at risk. Symptoms for humans could include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, or fever. In extreme cases, salmonella could lead to more severe health conditions, such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or even UTIs.
Dogs who have consumed or come into contact with contaminated food could also experience health problems. Symptoms for dogs include lethargy, diarrhea, fever, or vomiting. Your dog could also carry the bacteria without showing symptoms, which could lead to them passing it on to you.
So, if you’re concerned about salmonella symptoms for you or your dog, you should contact your vet or health care provider right away.
What Should You Do if You Have This Food?
If you serve your dog 4-pound bags of the Billy + Margot Wild Kangaroo and Superfoods Recipe, make sure you check the lot code on your bag. This code is often printed on the back of the bag. Retailers have also been asked to remove these products from shelves if they carry them.
Dispose of any of these dog food bags immediately and wash your hands thoroughly. Make sure to sanitize any surfaces that the food could’ve touched. For refunds or additional information, you can contact the Real Pet Food Company at 1-800-467-5494.
Your dog’s health is always a priority, which is why it’s essential to stay on top of the dog food recalls out there. Salmonella can be a scary thing to deal with, so make sure you’re extra cautious with what your dog eats and always sanitize your home if needed.
